The sale of the West Richland Municipal Golf Course is an important issue facing our city and it has divided the City Council and the community. While the Council has undoubtedly done what it feels best for the city,it isn't clear to me whether the public's opinion is being sufficiently represented by its elective body. In matters such as this one, with strong feelings and opinions on either side of the issue, it seems only appropriate that the public be heard from directly. Therefore, I feel that the best way to resolve this contentious issue would have been a public referendum which would have allowed the voting public to decide how best to handle the sale of the golf course. The people of West Richland are those who will benefit from the sale and so they should be represented in this situation's resolution. However, my intentions are not to second-guess the Council's decisions in this case, but to provide you the voter with an idea of how you can expect me to handle future issues. While it isn't practical to hold a referendum for every tough decision, I do believe that this issue was serious enough to have warranted one. If elected, I will not hesitate to eliminate situational uncertainty with the clarity of public opinion. After all, a representative body should do just that; represent its public. |
