One Week
Chapter Three
Cammy tapped her pencil against her desk impatiently. The whole day had seemed to drag on, and the last period of the day went the slowest. Her science teachers voice droned on, as Cammys patience wore thin.
A hand next to her grabbed the pencil. Someones a little anxious, Riley giggled.
Cammy cracked a smile. Well, can you blame me? I mean, who really cares about she trailed off, and then laughed. What IS he talking about anyway?
I have no clue! Riley laughed.
Cammy? Riley? Do you have something youd like to share with the class? their teacher, Mr. Rodriguez, asked while turning towards them.
No, sorry Mr. Rodriguez, Cammy said quickly. She really was sorry; Mr. Rodriguez was a really good teacher. She absentmindedly started to twirl a lock of her hair as she watched the clock. Ten minutes into the hair-twirling, Cammy realized it was the same strands of hair that Matt had played with the night before, standing outside her car. She dropped her hair and sighed. Five more minutes until freedom.
Finally, the bell rang, releasing the teens from their classroom prisons. Okay, so when are we going to the beach? Haylee asked at their outdoor lockers.
Were heading over there at five, then staying for the sunset, Cammy told her. She had called Matt at lunch to finalize plans. His friends that were with him at the mall are coming too. Cammy was still debating on telling her friends about Dream Street. On one hand, it seemed like something that should be kept secret. On the other hand, it wasnt so easy to keep the fact that your best friend was a celebrity a secret. Oh, and bring your surf board, Hayz. One of them wants to learn how to surf.
Alright, so well pick you and Sammi up at ten to five, okay? Kelly said to Cammy. The five friends agreed, then headed to their homes to get ready for their day at the beach.
Hey Camaro! Cammy and her friends had just arrived at the beach. The guys had been there already, waiting for the girls. Matt waved to Cammy, a blue Adidas visor on his head and a Frisbee in his hand.
Whats with Camaro? Haylee asked, wrestling her surf board out of the trunk.
A huge smile appeared on Cammys face. Old nickname, she said, and in turn called, Hi Matty!
Haylee smirked. Cammys got a cru-ush! she giggled.
Cammy whirled around to face the fourteen year old. Hayz, do the words Shawn Peterson mean anything to you? Besides, Matts my best friend. Nothing more.
Suuuure, Haylee replied, rolling her eyes. See, thats how it always starts Cammy ignored Haylee, and walked towards Matt and the other guys.
Hey guys, these are my friends, Cammy said, and proceeded to introduce them. Riley, Kelly, Haylee and Sammi. And girls, these are Matts friends. Cammy paused for a moment, trying to remember their names. Chris The spiky boy haired boy nodded. Greg The Italian smiled. Frankie The other Italian waved. And Jesse, Cammy finished.
The ten teens all said their hellos, and began laying out the beach blanket and passing around cans of Coke. Okay, so who wanted to learn how to surf? asked Haylee. Jesse smiled shyly at her as he raised his hand. Haylee smiled back and said, Okay, come on. The two walked towards the shore, and every so often one would look at the other and look away when the other turned their head towards them.
Aww, Riley cooed, and the other eight teens laughed. Cammy grinned, thinking NOW who has a crush? She wanted to say it out loud, but didnt, knowing that Haylee would most likely kill her for it.
So what have you girls been up to? Matt asked, pulling a bag of Burger King food out of the cooler. You guys want any fries? He held out his french fries to the others.
Cammy took a fry, and twirled it in her fingers. She suddenly remembered something that had happened when she still lived in New York. Remember when we stuck french fries up Davids nose? she asked Matt, laughing.
Matt spit out his soda, he had started to laugh so hard. Yeah, and he ran around the house with fries up his nose! My mom has a picture of it! The two old friends cracked up at the memory. I remember, I helped you set up a trap to catch the Tooth Fairy, and your dad almost broke his leg! Cammy laughed even more, remembering the sight of pots, pans, jump rope, and her father on her floor when shed awoken to yells of pain the night of her first lost tooth.
Remember when we finger painted your moms wall and she almost had a heart attack? Cammy said in between laughs.
Yeah! Ha, and remember when I threw up on the Magic Reading carpet thing in first grade and the teacher stepped in it? Matt and Cammy were lost in laughter as they recalled every single funny moment that had happened in their friendship. The other six shrugged their shoulders, and laughed along.
She tripped over fake grass Cammy cracked up again, the fifth time of laughing at the same thing. Theyd moved on from the funny things in Matt and Cammys friendship to funny things in general. The girls had been telling the guys about how during the sixth grade play the curtain girl had tripped over the wooden grass when her name was called at the end. The others were more or less laughing at the fact that Cammy couldnt stop laughing. That must have been so embarrassing, she said, gasping for air. She stayed silent, then repeated, She tripped over fake grass Cammy was sent into hysterics once again, making her friends groan.
Whats so funny? Haylee asked. She and Jesse were walking back to the group of teens. After many falls off the surf board, Jesse was at least able to stand up on the board. Something in Haylees eyes told Cammy and her friends that she didnt mind having to be out in the water alone with Jesse for almost an hour. Not that shed ever admit it of course.
Ooh, no, PLEASE dont get her started again, Matt laughed. Cammy punched his arm playfully. Matt shoved her lightly, which made Cammy push him back, so he was lying in the sand. Matt pushed her over in return and pinned her in the sand. Cammy laughed and tried to flip him back over, but her friend was too strong for her.
Suddenly Cammy realized what this looked like, and sat straight up. Ha, I keep forgetting were not little kids anymore, she laughed nervously, looking at her friends. They all looked back at Cammy with sly grins on their faces. Hey, its almost time for the sunset, Cammy said, changing the subject quickly. Haylee opened her mouth to say something, but Cammy shot her a look that said, Keep your mouth shut about Matt and Ill keep mine shut about Jesse. Haylee got the message loud and clear. Cammy was relieved. Not that she had a crush on Matt though. No way.
Fifteen minutes later, the ten teens were watching a glorious sunset. Wow, that is so beautiful, Frankie breathed. Do you girls get to see sunsets like this all the time?
Sammi told him, Not all the time, but every weekend we come here to watch the sunset. Its one of our traditions.
Greg grinned. Well, now that weve seen a glimpse of your lives, its time for you to take a glimpse of ours.
Kelly giggled. And whats that supposed to mean? she asked, a cute smile on her face.
Greg looked at Matt, who looked at Cammy. Didnt you tell them? Matt asked. Cammy slowly shook her head no.
Tell us what? an intrigued Riley asked.
Cammy bit her lip, and said, Matt, Greg, Chris, Jesse, and Frankie are in a boy band. Dream Street. Have you heard of them?
Haylees face broke into a huge smile. Are you serious? I just heard your song on the radio, like last week! Youre really them? Jesse nodded, smiling at her. Oh, wow thats awesome! By the way, your song was good. She then grinned slyly. But I was wonderingwhat exactly Happens Every Time? The girls cracked up, and the guys (especially Jesse) turned an embarrassed shade of red. Aww, Im just messin around, Haylee laughed, seeing how embarrassed they were.
Anyway, Greg continued, half-smiling. We were wondering if you girls would be able to come to a concert of ours tomorrow. Its at a mall, we can give you the directions.
Sure, well come, Cammy told him. She rubbed her bare arms. Its so cold out here!
Here, Matt said, tossing her his sweatshirt. You can wear it, Ill be fine.
Cammy grinned. Thanks Matty. Are you sure you dont want it for yourself? He nodded, and Cammy pulled it over her head. I hate being cold, she stated, leaning against Matt and using his shoulder as a pillow.
Matt laughed. You used to love playing in the snow, though, he reminded her, smiling down at Cammy.
Cammy shrugged. A few minutes later, her face broke into a huge grin. Remember when David ate that yellow snow?
The two friends laughter echoed across the beach, ringing through the air and stretching across the ocean.
