Daphne (also know as Dangerprone Daphne) was usually the one to get caught by the villians or mess up the traps that Freddy invented. The only useful trait she had was to occasionaly stumble across a clue and look pretty.

Freddy led the gang and was always the one to initiate the mysteries. Usually he would always pair himself with Daphne which has developed many rumors among Scooby-Doo critics and fans. Freddy also created those amazing traps that almost always failed towards the end of the show. A Boy Scout perhaps...

Scooby was the hero of the show and has become one of the most famous cartoon dogs in history. The cowardly dog always seemed to save the day on every episode. Scooby was Shaggy's partner in crime in helping him eat hamburgers, pizzas, hotdogs and whatever else was edible and non-edible.

Shaggy was by far the most entertaining character on the show. Shaggy was usually the bait to catch the villian(s) and he occasionally stumbled across a clue or trap door by accident. His wimpish crys, 70's clothes, silly ways to get away from villians (namely disguising himself and Scooby on the spur of the moment), and bottomless stomach have created a cartoon character that will never be matched and have the same comical effect.

Velma is the only cartoon character I know of that can speak every language in the world. She was the brains of the gang and helped put together the clues to solve the mystery. Despite her intelligence, she always seemed to lose her glasses on every show. Velma was sometimes paired with Shaggy and Scooby which sometimes proved to be very comical. Without Velma, none of the mysteries would have been solved in that small 30 minute time gap that most networks require.
