In an exam you will notice the word "OF", this means you have to find a percentage of a number. Take these steps work with percentages. 1 % means "one out of one hundred" or "one hundredth". So to work out 1 % of something, you devide by 100. There are ten lots of 0.1 which go together to make up 1. So 0.1 = 1/ 10. Therefore 0.2 = 2/10, and so on. With 0.01, there are one hundred of these that go together to make 1. So 0.01 as a percentage = 1/100. To find a fraction "of" a quantity, we multiply by that quantity. Eg. 3/4 of 12 = 3/4 x 12 Putting numbers in the simplest form - You must make both the numbers (the top and bottom numbers) as small as possible. You can do anything to the top and bottom numbers, as long as you do the same to both. An example 3/9 - You can divide both numbers equally by 3. So the simplest form equals 1/3. |
