MONEY

Welcome to the Money page!

Lesson:

Money is what we use in exchange for goods or services.  In the United States, the money system is based upon dollars and cents.  The symbol for a dollar is $ and the symbol for a cent is ¢.

There are four main coins that represent different amounts of cents:

1.         Penny:  a penny represents one cent and has President Abraham Lincoln on one side and the Lincoln Memorial on the other side.  100 pennies equal $1.00 (One Dollar).

2.         Nickel: a nickel represents five cents and has President Thomas Jefferson on one side and Monticello on the other side.  20 nickels equal $1.00 (One Dollar).

3.         Dime:  a dime represents 10 cents and has President Franklin D. Roosevelt on one side and an olive branch, torch and oak branch on the other side.  10 dimes equal $1.00 (One Dollar).

4.         Quarter: a quarter represents 25 cents and has President George Washington on one side and the image on the other side varies depending on what year the coin was made.  4 quarters equal $1.00 (One Dollar).

5.         There are also coins that represent 50 cents and $1.00 but are not used as much as the 4 coins mentioned above.

In addition to coins, the United States also uses paper money called Dollars.

Dollar bills are currently printed in the amounts of $1.00, $2.00, $5.00, $10.00, $20.00, $50.00 and $100.00.  In the past, Dollar bills were printed in larger amounts such as $500.00 and $1,000.00.

Historical figures are printed on each dollar amount, similar to the coins above.

1.         $1.00 – President George Washington

2.         $2.00 – President Thomas Jefferson

3.         $5.00 – President Abraham Lincoln

4.         $10.00 – Alexander Hamilton

5.         $20.00 – President Andrew Jackson

6.         $50.00 – President Ulysses S. Grant

7.         $100.00 – Benjamin Franklin
