Lesson:

A Fraction is a part of a whole.  The bottom number is called the denominator and it says how many parts the whole is divided into.  The top number is called the numerator and says how many parts that you have.

Example:

Sarah has 1 piece of pie.  There are 3 total pieces of pie.  What fraction of the pie does Sarah have?

SarahÕs 1 piece is the numerator amount, which goes on the top of the fraction.

The 3 total pieces is the denominator amount, which goes on the bottom of the fraction.

1 (numerator)

______________  = Sarah has 1/3 (one-third) of the pie
