| DESCENDANTS OF JOHN MATHERS I CIRCA 1760-2000 Use your browsers "find" function to search this page. This family genealogy shows, principally, the direct descendants of John Mathers and Jane McKeever who were from Londonderry County, Ulster, North Ireland, and came to the United States about the year 1794 with their twelve year old son, James. John Mathers and his family landed in Chester, Pennsylvania, which at the time was a port and had docks serving Philadelphia. Other Mathers's, presumably relatives, had lived there since 1743. Other children may have accompanied them, but it is certain that most of the remainder of their children were born in the United States. After living in the Chester area for a period of less than 10 years, the family moved to Tioga County, Pennsylvania, and settled west of Wellsboro, near Ansonia. Land was bought from the Wharton Land holders of Philadelphia and the family engaged in farming. Later they erected a small saw mill and were involved in the milling business. James left the family shortly after the move to Tioga, married Mary Walton of Bucks County, PA (near Philadelphia) and established his family in the Luzerne County area (northeastern PA), also pursuing the milling business. Research on this genealogy was done by Mr. Howard Mathers, Forty Fort, Pennsylvania; Mr. Harry Mathers I, Lockport, IL, and Mrs. James Benjamin (Marilyn Mathers), Indianapolis, IN. Some sections were completed by Mr. Harry Mathers I shortly before his death. It was originally compiled by Mrs. James Benjamin of Indianapolis, Indiana about 1963. This was dedicated to Mr. Harry Mathers I, 1902-1963, who lost his battle for life Dec. 14, 1963, shortly before completion of this work. The following shows the family structure for the first six generations, counting that of John I. The youngest children of the family are currently in the ninth generation. For security reasons only data on the first six generations are listed for internet posting. Those interested in available data for subsequent generations, and anyone who can fill in dates or provide further information should contact Bill by E-Mail below or by telephone 610-258-8484. He immigrated with his family to Chester County, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia about 1794. He entered into contract with Thomas Eachus, merchant at Wagontown, Chester Co., PA, between 1794 and 1807. He moved his family to Tioga Co., PA, between 1800 and 1810 and settled in Broughton Hollow, about five miles west of Wellsboro, PA. Later they moved about a mile west of Wellsboro where he lived the remainder of his life on the homestead farm. Search of court house and library records as well as cemetery records in Wellsboro as well as cemetery searching in West Branch and Ansonia failed to reveal accurate birth and death dates. This search was made in 1963 and further investigation around Broughton Hollow might prove useful. Children of John and Jane were Charles, James, William, Robert, John, Jane, Eliza, Mary and Rebeccah. James Mathers 1782-1843 James was born in Londonderry County, North Ireland, and came the USA with his parents, John Mathers I and Jane McKeever, at the age of twelve. They moved to Mill Hollow (currently Luzerne) in Luzerne County, northeastern PA, and engaged in the manufacture of paper. Burial is assumed to be at the Forty-Fort, PA, cemetery, but the grave location has not been determined (1963). In 1972 a major flood of the nearby Susquehanna river caused by the effects of Hurricane Agnes destroyed much of the cemetery and there is little chance his grave site will ever be found.
