Financial Aid Questions
- This
looks like a pretty good financial-aid award for my first year-what will it
look like for the rest of my college career?
- Are
there conditions attached to my scholarship or grant? Do I have to maintain
a certain GPA or major in the field that I said I would in applying for the
grant?
- My
aid package has student loans in it. How
much will be expected to borrow over time? And how much will it cost to
repay these loans?
- What
if my familys finances change? My mother may lose her job; my sister may
go to college next year; or my grandmother will move in with us.
Will your college be able to offer me more aid, or should we make our
plans for the future based on the current aid package?
- There
is a chance Ill get a scholarship from a local organization.
Will your school change the aid package you gave me because I have
this local scholarship?
- My
parents will have trouble paying their assigned share of college costs over
four years. Is there any way
for them to spread their payments out over a longer period of time?
- Part
of my aid package is a campus job. What
kind of jobs do students have on campus and how many hours am I expected to
work?
- Are
there other scholarship and/or loan programs that I should consider applying
for?
Scholarship Scams
According to the Federal Trade
Commission (FTC), legitimate scholarship search companies never guarantee or
promise scholarships or grants. Some
companies and individuals illegally misrepresent their services; either by
direct mail or phone calls solicitation. Be
suspicious of these telltales lines:
- The
scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.
- You
cant get this information anywhere else.
- I
need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship.
- Well
do all the work.
- The
scholarship will cost some money.
- Youve
been selected by a national foundation to receive a scholarship, or
Youre a finalist in a scholarship competition you never entered.
