| TEST TAKING TIPS FOR STUDENTS | ||||||
| 1. Preview the Test Before beginning the test, preview it and examine the quantity and types of questions. Be emotionally and physically prepared to take the test. 2. Budget Your Time Decide how much time you will need to spend on each section or item. Make sure that you have a watch or clock visible. 3. Read the Directions Make sure that you carefully read the directions and understand what you are required to do. 4. Answering the Questions Answer the easy items first. Then, go back and answer the more difficult ones. Answer all of the questions unless you are penalized for the wrong answers. Keep the instructors point of view in mind. What does the instructor want you to know, and what kind of answer does that individual want? 5. Essays Write your essays in the correct format desired by the teacher. For example, you may need to include an introductory paragraph, body, and conclusion. Did you include the necessary examples and supporting information? Did you really answer the question? Do your main points stand out? 6. Ask Questions When an item is unclear, ask the instructor about it. How you interpret the question can often determine whether your response is right or wrong. 7. Use the Time Allotted Use all of the time allotted for test taking. If you have extra time, go back and review the questions and your answers. Make sure that your answers correspond to the right question. Rework any questions, which you found difficult. 8. Reviewing a Returned Test When you receive your graded test, examine the questions that you got wrong. Determine why you missed them, or jot down the information so that you can research the correct answer later. Oftentimes, you will need to know that information later in the course or in a future course. Determine if the questions were referred more to the class notes or to the textbook. This will help you know on which you should focus most of your attention for the next test. Read any comments that the instructor may have written. If you are unclear as to why you missed a question, ask the instructor about it. Determine what ways you could have better studies for the exam. You also need to make sure that the amount of points deducted was accurate.
