FRATERNAL REVIEW

STATED MEETINGS
From the 3rd Quarter 1992 Cable-Tow of Hawaiian Lodge reporting on Grand Lodge
of Hawaii activities:

"Opening and closing of Lodge in Stated Meetings to he in THIRD degree and
shall he called down to accomodate EA and FC who desire admission - PASSED."

GERMANY
Had to go all around the world for this information. The Tasmanian (Australia)
Mason for September 1992 quoted from the 1992 Yearbook published by the United
Grand Lodges of Germany and apparently other sources there:

"For the first time in an appendix in the back of the book the particulars of
the Lodges established or re-established in the former East Germany are also
listed. Their number has now reached 23; not a had start considering it is
only 18 months since the unification of Germany and the difficulties which had
to be and still have to be overcome.

"One hegins to appreciate the magnitude of those difficulties when reading
through some of the articles published in German Masonic magazines. In human
terms there is first of all a deep seated mistrust of all things institutional -
a consequence of over 40 years of state control. Masonry with its formality
and ritual may be seen as being akin to some of those institutions of the past.
So this mistrust has to be overcome for masonry to re-establish itself. And
that is only one of the problems.

"In material terms there is the lack of Masonic Temples or meeting places as
well as lodge furnishings and regalia. The last two of those is relatively
easy to remedy, but the question of Masonic Temples will be a major problem.
Remember all Masonic buildings were confiscated as long ago as 1935 hy the Nazi
regime and had never been given back after the war when the Communists took
over. To establish ownership after all those years can he quite a legal
nightmare and a costly one as well. In West Germany it took nearly ten years of
legal wrangle to have Masonic property returned to the rightful owners."

The same issue tells us that: "Recently, the Australian Masonic Research
Council (AMRC) was formed at a Research Lodge Conference in Melhourne. Almost
all Research Lodges in Australia have affiliated with ARMC, which in future
will co-ordinate research activities across Australia and hold a biennial
research conference."

MEMORY WORK
I was quite intrigued (guess why) with a statement by the wife of Admiral
Stockdale when she was interviewed as to her hushands qualifications after his
debate with Vice President candidates Quayle and Gore:

"I don't think memorization has anything to do with being President of the
United States."

MASONIC MEMBERSHP
Seems to be quite a debate lately as to which of our early day patriots were
Freemasons. Would like to recommend "Masonic Membership Of The Founding
Fathers," a 1974 revision of the 1965 publication hy Heaton; examines evidence
of Masonic membership of 241 Revolutionary patriots. Publication #238
available for $2.00 postpaid from The Masonic Service Association of the United
States (publisher of the Masonic Short Talk Bulletins you receive), 8120 Fenton
Street, Silver Spring MD 20901.

TABLE LODGE
And l have had a number of inquiries as to just what a Tahle Lodge is or isn't,
so would recommend another publication of The Masonic Service Association,
"Masonic Feasts, Banquets and Table Lodges." Historic data and rituals of
Table Lodges." Revised 1983. Publication #145. $2.50 postpaid. When ordering
ask for a copy of their catalog of Publications and Materials.

FREEMASONRY - CELEBRATION OF THE CRAFT
Another item that we have been contacted on but have not been able to make a
proper deal that would warrant including it in our book stock.

Briefly, what it is, in the words of Thomas W. Jackson, Grand Secretary of the
Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania and book reviewer for The Northern Light,
publication of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction Scottish Rite:

" Certainly one of our most beautiful volumes ever prepareb on Freemasonry. It
was released at a time to correlate with the 275th anniversary of the
establishment of the United Grand Lodge of England - the beginning of organized
Freemasonry as we know it.

"This volume is a very high-quality publication filled with numerous plates,
most in full cover illustrating and emphasizing the written word. It is a
large tabletop book, 10 1/2 " X 12 1/2" and deserves a place in every Freemason's
home.

Best deal seems to he ordering from Supreme Council, NMJ, P.O. Box 519,
Lexington MA 02173, $50 plus $3.50 (weighs over four pounds) shipping.
