1745  13   In school at Rev. James Mary's School in 
Fredericksburg. 1748  16   Hired by Lord Fairfax to work with Mr. 
Gist.
  
1749  17   Through an examination and commission of William and 
Mary College Washington was made the official Surveyor of 
Culpeper County.
  
1752  20   November 6 - Appointed Adjutant General of Virginia 
with rank of major.
1753  21   November 10 - Assigned to the Northern District of 
Virginia.
  
1754  22   April 2, - Began march as Lieutenant Colonel of 
Virginia Regiment to reinforce and complete the fort at the forks 
of the Ohio.
  
1754  22   May 28 - Attacked French detachment under Jumonville; 
killed leader; beginning of the French and Indian war. 1754  22   
June 4 - Appointed Colonel on death of Col Fry.

  
1755  23   April 23 - Left Mt Vernon to join Gen. Braddock's 
Forces at Fort Cumberland, as Volunteer aide on general staff.
  
1758  26   Nov. 25 -Forbe's army occupies site of Fort Duquesne, 
French having destroyed the fort and retreated the day before.
  
1758  26   Nov. 30 - Washington resigned military commission. 
returns to Mt. Vernon.
  
1759  26   Jan. 6 - Married to Martha (Dandridge) Custis. 1759  
26   Jan.12 - While Honeymooning at Williamsburg, He was seated 
as a member of the House of Burgesses.
  
1769  37   May 16 - Voted with the other burgesses in adopting 
the Virginia Resolves. The Governor dissolved the House of 
Burgesses.
  
1770  38   Oct. 5 - Washington and party set out for trip down 
the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers, selecting land for grants to the 
officers of the First Virginia Regiment for their services.
  
1774  42   May 24 - Burgesses appointed a day of fasting because 
of the Boston Port Bill, and being dissolved., they met the nest 
day at Raleigh Tavern and renewed the Non-importation Assn. and 
suggested the calling of an intercolonial congress.
  
1774  42   Aug. 1-6 - Attended the Virginia Provincial Convention 
at Williamsburg; elected a delegate to the first Continental 
Congress.
1774  42   Sept. 5 to Oct.26 - Attended Continental Congress at 
Philadelphia.

  
 1775  43   Mar. 20-27 - Attended second Provincial Convention in 
Richmond and            is again elected to Continental Congress.

  
1775  43   June 15 - Elected by Congress as General and 
Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the United Colonies. Accepted 
June 16th; and Commissioned June 19th.

  
1775  43   July 3 - Took command at Cambridge, Mass.

  1781  49   Aug. - Cornwallis' British army after a Virginia 
campaign with        Lafayette and Steuben, takes up post at

1781  49   Following the surrender, the American Army returned to 
the Hudson, but the French remain in Virginia until the latter 
part  of 1782   when the march to Boston and embark for France.

1783  51   Nov. 25 - Reoccupies New York City on the evacuation

1783  51   Dec. 23 - Surrenders his commission to the Congress at

Washington elected President of United States.

1790  58   July 16 - Signed act for the permanent capital; 
Appointed commissioners to supervise the exact location of the 
district, and layout of city. He was very active in this work 
during his administration.

1793  61   Jefferson resigned to become the first opposition to

1797  65   After attending the inauguration of John Adams He 
returns to Mount Vernon to resume life as an active Farmer.
