GRAPHICS - COMPUTER
Had a call from one of our members asking if we knew of any source of Masonic
graphics. Came up lucky for the February issue of the Grand Lodge Newsletter
of Illinois had such information. I then asked if there would be enough
interest in this to include it in our information and received a resounding
yes.

The Illinois Lodge of Research is proud to announce that we are making
computerized Masonic graphic images available to the brethren. These images
are high quality and are perfect for enhancing Trestleboards, brochures,
flyers - and Masonic correspondence. There are over 130 images ranging from
officer's jewels to working tools along with symbols and emblems of each of
the three degrees. There are also images from several of the appendant bodies
including Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shrine and Eastern Star.

These images are in TIFF format and available for IBM compatible or Apple
computers and ready to incorporate into your favorite word processing or
desktop publishing program. To order, send $10 along with your name, address
and Lodge name and number to Illinois Lodge of Research, c/Mike Losacco, 290
Arrowhead Trail, Carol Stream IL 61088. Please specify IBM compatible or
Apple format and media preference (5-1/4 or 3-1/2 disk).

POTPOURRI
"From Alpha to Omega In Monticello Lodge" in the September 1993 Minnesota
Mason:

In 1861, Bro. Sam Adams owned a general store and tavern in Monticello,
Minnesota, which was a popular meeting place. Bro. Adams rented the upstairs
rooms to Monticello Lodge No. 16. He was the Worshipful Master.

Mrs. Adams was pregnant, having labor pains. As the patrons of the tavern
became boisterous, the Adams' living quarters in the rear of the building
became too noisy. Bro. Adams took his wife upstairs and placed her on the
floor by the altar. He then summoned Dr. James W. Mulvey who was also the
Junior Warden. Baby Henry was born that day - September 15, 1861. He later
became a Mason in the same room in which he was born. He became Master of
the Lodge in 1884. In 1903 he became Grand Master of Masons of the State of
Minnesota.

On March 30, 1927 he was asked to attend in Lodge to make a presentation. He
was fatally stricken at the altar. Thus a highly successful Masonic life ended
as it began - in a Masonic Lodge.

ALASKA - RUSSIA
Two items that should be noted and they were in the February 1994 The North
Star of the Grand Lodge of Alaska:

Alaska's newest Lodge - the first to be organized in southeast Alaska, Tongass
Lodge, was to be constituted April 9th. When the Grand Lodge of Alaska was
formed, the Lodges in the southeast remained under the Grand Lodge of
Washington.

On July 21st a group of Alaska members will journey to Magadan, Russia, a four
hour flight, staying with Russian host families during their visit which will
include special luncheons, banquets, shopping, picnics. They will return July
30th, arriving in Anchorage, Alaska July 29th. We must mention this as the
Secretary of the Masonic Russian Committee, Jerry R. Fairley, is a SCRL
member.

HERBERT HOOVER - DEMOLAY
Quoting from the February 1994 Emessay (Masonic Service Association) Notes:

Herbert Hoover Awarded DeMolay Legion of Honor in 1931!

Apparently for one of the few, if not only time, the Legion of Honor was
awarded to a non-Mason. The Certificate reads "In recognition of his interest
in youth and the great contribution he has made for their welfare by way of
sponsoring the "White House Conference of Child Health and Protection."

To the best of our knowledge President Herbert Hoover was not a Mason. We have
no information about any Masonic membership and we do not list him with other
Presidents who were known to be Masons. If any reader has other information,
please let us know!

President Hoover certainly supported our youth and we should always remember
that!

HARRY TRUMAN
From the March 1994 Bulletin of Pythagoras Lodge of Research, F.A.A.M., of the
District of Columbia quoting from Sesqui-Centennial History 1811-1961:

Grand Master Marvin Earrington was present in our Hiram Lodge No. 10 on the
evening of November 6, 1947, at which time that Lodge had the privilege of
receiving a visit from the President of the United States, M.W. Bro. Harry S.
Truman, a Past Grand Master of Masons in the State of Missouri. The President
was accompanied by his Military Aide, Brother and Major General Harry H.
Vaughn, a member of Tuscan Lodge No. 360, St. Louis, Missouri. The President
remained throughout the conferring of the Master Mason Degree on three
Fellowcrafts, two of whom were receivng the degree as a courtesy to their
respective lodges in Missouri. Brothers Wallace Harry Graham of Country Club
Lodge No. 656, Kansas City, and Thomas J. Burns of Twilight Lodge No. 114 of
Columbia, were personally raised by Brother Truman in turn, and the Lodge
minutes record that the President "proved himself an exceIlent and well-
informed ritualist."
