1994 OFFICERS

The Officers of the Computer Club were reelected for 1994 and the
Club voted to present $300 to the Kena Transportation Fund. Two members of
the November Class joined the Club. The minutes showed we have 120 paid
members and 98 paid friends as of the November meeting.

NEXT MEETING

The December 16, 1993 meeting will feature a discussion of the
advantages of the new DOS 6.2 Upgrade. Come and bring a friend. The meeting
will be in the Oasis Room and will start at 7:30 PM. Christmas refreshments
will be served.

NEW PROGRAMS

ORGINS01.ZIP is a growing file containing excellent provocative
messages on the subject of Masonic Origins from CIS. The Scottish Rite
Journal issues through December 1993, the Philalethes Magazines and the Short
Talk Bulletins are currently online. If you have other Masonic Magazines and
a scanner, please scan them and upload them for others to read. Thank you.
The shareware authors have been active. Please note these excellent programs
are now on Hiram's Oasis. Two new membership programs, PDMEMB3A.ZIP - ProDev
Member (Church membership) and IDPMEM40.ZIP IDP-Member (Club membership),
appear to be user friendly data programs but lack the necessary fields for a
Lodge Secretary. Several Smart-N-Easy data programs, Home Inventory, Party
Planner and Wedding Planner are available. Party planner assists in planning
and organizing seating, tickets, guest lists, tickets and table assignments.
Wedding Planner would make an excellent engagement gift. The S-N-E programs
are reasonably priced at $15 each, and can be download and tried at your
convenience before registering. ORDERPRO.ZIP is an order entry system for a
mid- sized business to enter orders, adjusts inventory tracks sales,
receivables, prepares invoices, prints shipping and mailing labels, and many
other features. ($99 to register). PCMECH22.ZIP is a Mechanical Preventative
Maintenance program with inventory, work orders and more. DCF43.ZIP is a $25
disk copy program that is 45% faster than DOS DISKCOPY and reads the source
diskette into upper memory or to the HD and copies and formats as many copies
as desired with only one read. This one rates four stars. STEPUP.EXE, Direct
from Microsoft, with their permission, upgrades MSDOS 6.0 to 6.2. You MUST
have 6.0 installed to upgrade with this. This upgrade corrects the problems
with Double Space and other "Bugs". DOS62NEW is a text file describing the
features of the upgrade. TICKLE80.ZIP is a appointment scheduler for bootup.
Reminds you of things to do. Easy to set up. SHORTS01.ZIP, SHORTS, and
1LINERS are excellent resource sources for those who write trestleboards or
newsletters. A sample of the 1LINERS is included at the end of this
newsletter

DOS TIP

SPACES IN FILE NAMES.
The MS-DOS operating system does not allow spaces to be a part of
file names. Some MS-DOS software, however, will allow you to include a space
in a file name. This should be avoided, since you won't be able to access the
file easily using normal DOS commands. For example, "ERASE MY FILE.TXT" will
generate the response "File not found." If you encounter such a dilemma,
there is a workaround. A special "space" character can be created from the
keyboard that will work. At the DOS prompt, hold down the ALT key as you
enter the number 255 on the numeric keypad. When you release the ALT key,
this special "space" character will appear (though it won't look any
different from a normal space). Using this technique, it would be possible to
delete the file in the above example by entering:

		ERASE MY<ALT><255>FILE.TXT

Be sure to hold down the ALT key as you enter the number 255. The
number (which is the ASCII value of the character you want to enter) must be
entered from the numeric keypad on the right side of the keyboard (NUMLOCK
should be off). Although this will work from the DOS prompt, many software
programs won't let you enter characters in this way.

ODDS-N-THINGS

I understand that the Grand Lodges of the District of Columbia and
Maryland recently voted "NO" to propositions to conduct business in the
Entered Apprentice Degree.
