DUTIES OF LODGE OFFICERS

NOTE:  The duties given in this list are typical for an average Lodge.  They might
apply to your specific Lodge.  Use them as a guide for developing a list that will be
appropriate to the needs of your officers.  The Master, Wardens, and two or three Past
Masters should act as a committee to prepare the list that will be designed to help
your Lodge and its officers.

MASTER

1. Be thoroughly familiar with the California Masonic Code, particularly Sections
   1122, 2528, and 2530.
2.  Be proficient in all degree work, including the lectures.
3.  Keep the Brethren informed of ALL Lodge activities through a monthly Bulletin.
4.  Appoint all committee chairmen, and in some cases, the committeemen necessary.
5.  Plan all events for the year.
6.  Responsible for all funerals and the proper conducting of same.
7.  Schedule all degrees with the assistance of the head candidate's coach.
8.  Responsible for having all junior officers proficient and ready to advance when
    needed, and at appointed advancement time.
9.  Responsible for the attendance of ALL officers and coaches at ALL District Assn.
    meetings and official Schools of Instruction.
10. Attend Grand Lodge.  (You are a voting member. )
11. Specify who is to give each Charge.  Notify him and the Officers Coach.
12. Maintain regular communication with the Officer's Coach on all ritual work.

SENIOR WARDEN

1.  Be thoroughly familiar with the C.M.C., particularly Section 2538.
2.  In charge of all Candidates and Candidates' coaches, and to report to the Master on
    their proficiency.
3.  Confer all Second Degrees until July 1, all Third Degrees thereafter.
4.  Attend Grand Lodge.  (You are a voting member. )
5.  Plan ahead for your year as MASTER

JUNIOR WARDEN

1.  Be thoroughly familiar with the C.M.C., particularly Section 2538.
2.  In charge of all refreshments, dinners, recreational activities, etc.
3.  Pay for all food and supplies from the Jr. Warden's "Refreshment Fund".
4.  Make arrangements for the attendance of ALL officers at Officers' Association
    meetings and Schools of Instruction.
5.  Attend Grand Lodge.  (You are a voting member. )
6.  Present a written accounting, with receipts, to the Secretary, for all expenditures
    from the "Refreshment Fund", at least two days prior to the Stated Meeting.
7.  Confer all First Degrees until July 1, all Second Degrees thereafter.

TREASURER

1. Duties as given in Section 2546 of C.M.C.
2. Those duties as outlined for ALL OFFICERS in this listing.

SECRETARY

1. Duties as given.in Section 2548 of C.M.C.
2.  Those duties as outlined for ALL OFFICERS in this listing.

SENIOR DEACON

1.  Become familiar with the California Masonic Code.
2.  Responsible for the middle chamber lecture of the 2nd Degree until July 1;
    thereafter, the Master's work in the First Degree including the lecture.
3.  Assist the Master when so requested and necessary.
4.  Check the lodge room for proper set-up PRIOR to the opening of Lodge.
5.  Attend to and introduce visiting Brethren, including Grand Lodge Officers,
    Inspectors and Grand Lodge Committeemen at ALL meetings.
6.  In conjunction with the Junior Warden, notify and/or remind __ALL officers and
    coaches of time and place of District Officers' Assn. meetings and Schools of
    Instruction.
7.  Ensure that candidates are properly prepared and cared for.

JUNIOR DEACON

1.  Answer all alarms at the door.  During times of "refreshment", remain near the door
    prepared to invite the brethren into the Lodge at Master's order.
2.  Responsible for the middle chamber lecture of the 2nd Degree after July 1.
3.  Assist Senior Deacon as required.
4.  Assist the Senior Deacon in checking the lodge room prior to opening, and be pre-
    pared to assume any of his duties if required.

MARSHALL

1.  Attend to all escorting of distinguished visitors and Brethren, and the Flag of our
    country.
2.  Interrogations of all First Degree candidates.   (DO NOT READ. )

SENIOR STEWARD

1.  Assist the Junior Warden when required.
2.  First Traveler.
3.  Know all rod work and floor work.
4.  Responsible for the proper preparation of candidates for each degree.  Know all
    degree signs and how to give them in the proper manner.  Instruct candidates in
    same when required, prior to 2nd and 3rd Degrees.
5.  Be prepared to do Junior Deacon's work when required.
6.  Responsible for table set-up and preparation and serving of refreshments.

JUNIOR STEWARD

1.  Assist Junior Warden when required.
2.  Second Traveler.
3.  Know all rod work and floor work.
4.  Assist Senior Steward in table set-up and preparing and serving refreshments.
5.  Be prepared to do Senior Steward's work when required.
6.  Assist Senior Steward in properly preparing candidates prior to Degrees.



DUTIES OF OFFICERS, continued

CHAPLAIN

1.  Give all opening and closing prayers.   (DO NOT READ. )
2.  Be prepared to give appropriate prayers prior to dinners and other functions.
3.  In preparing for, and giving non-ritual prayers, remember that Masonry is NOT a
    Christian organization and therefore no mention should be made of Christ, "Son of
    God", or any similar title.
4.  Give peramulation talk in all three degrees.   (DO NOT READ. )
5.  DO NOT prompt the Master during any ritual work.  This is the duty of the Officers'
    Coach !

TILER

1.  Remain in Tiler's room to properly guard the outer door to prevent interruptions
    and to keep all unauthorized persons out.
2.  Responsible for having all attending sign the register in the proper place, and to
    see that all Brethren are properly clad and vouched for.
3.  Promptly answer the telephone if it rings during time when Lodge is in session.
    Relay any messages necessary, through the Junior Deacon.
4.  Properly attend to the lights in the preparation room during the conferral of the
    Degrees, and see that the door to the same is closed when required.
5.  Notify Master of your intention to vote, prior to opening of Stated Meeting.

DUTIES OF ALL OFFICERS

1.  Attend ALL Lodge functions.
2.  If unable to attend, or carry out all your assigned jobs, notify the Master well
    in advance so that he may arrange for another to do your job.
3.  Keep all Ritual serious, dignified, and a credit to you, your Lodge, & Masonry!
4.  Be on time (preferrably early) for all meetings and functions to greet and make
    welcome all members and visitors.
5.  Visit your Officers' Coach regularly to ensure that your Ritual work will be the
    best you can do.  It is YOUR responsibility to be proficient, not his!
6.  Be prepared to work at least two stations ahead at all times.
7.  Advise and assist junior officers.
8.  Attend ALL District Officer's Assn. meetings and Schools of Instruction.  Be ready
    to do your required work when called upon.  If you are unable to attend these
    meetings, you can be excused ONLY by the inspector.
9.  Attend to all other duties that the Master may deem necessary to assign to you.
10. If in doubt as to what you should do or say, ASK FOR HELP!

NOTE TO ALL OFFICERS:  This list of duties has been prepared so that each man will know
what is expected of him.  It also should be used to determine what will be expected of him
as an officer progresses up the line.  If you feel that there is some item in your
office duties that you cannot handle, discuss it with your Master, or if it is a Ritual
matter, with your Officers' Coach or Inspector.  In hardship cases some minor
adjustments miqht be made.
If you feel that you will not be able to fulfill the duties of your office, or of
future offices up the line, you owe it to yourself, your Lodge, and Masonry to resign
now, so that someone else can begin training and gain the necessary proficiency.
