                      Workshops Set the Pace

"Setting the Pace" is the appropriate theme of the l990-91
Scottish Rite Workshops. Already two meetings--the South Central
Sector Workshop in Dallas, Texas, March 16-17, and the Southeast
Sector Workshop in West Palm Beach, Florida, April 20-21, have
inspired Brethren to quicken the pace of Scottish Rite progress
both in their own Orients and across America.
Even before attending the South Central Workshop, Sov... Gr...
Cmdr... C. Fred Kleinknecht, 33, Assistant Gr... Sec... Gen... W. Gene
Sizemore, 33, Ill... Sam E. Hilburn, 33, S...G...I...G... in Texas, and
Ill... Robert L. Dillard, Jr., 33, Personal Representative, Scottish
Rite Bodies of Dallas, were on the move visiting "Lone Star State"
Brethren. On Thursday, March 15, for instance, Grand Commander
Kleinknecht visited the Scottish Rite Dormitory, University of
Texas in Austin, Texas; the Lee Lockwood Library and Museum in
Waco, Texas, and the Grand Lodge of Texas, also in Waco.
The Scottish Rite Dormitory provides home-like surroundings
and security to young women attending the University of Texas in
Austin, and the Lee Lockwood Library and Museum, named after the
late past S...G...I...G... of Texas, provides a rich resource for all
students of Masonry and Texas.
Friday was no less busy as Grand Commander Kleinknecht,
Admiral Sizemore, and Ill... Hilburn, who is Chairman of the Board of
Trustees of the hospital, and Ill... Dillard visited the Scottish
Rite Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas, joining Bro... J. C.
Montgomery, Jr. 32, K...C...C...H..., President of the hospital, and Ill...
James F. Chambers, Jr., 33, Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees
of the hospital, for breakfast at this magnificent facility in
service to America's youth.
After these visits, one day, March 16, devoted to a very
beneficial Secretaries conference lead by Ill... Martin D. Carlin,
33, Grand Cross, and Assistant Gr... Sec... Sizemore, and an evening
dinner, hosted by Inspector Hilburn welcoming conference
dignitaries, the General Session of the South Central Sector
Workshop began on Saturday, March 17, with a greeting to all
participants by Ill... Hilburn, introductions and remarks by Grand
Commander Kleinknecht, and an outlining of the session by Assistant
Gr... Sec... Sizemore.
As in previous Workshops, the successful pattern was followed
of morning general presentations followed by smaller afternoon
leadership meetings. The morning agenda in Dallas included: Dr.
John W. Boettjer, 32, K...C...C...H..., outlining changes in The Scottish
Rite Journal; Ill... Walter S. Downs, 33, pointing out ways to
improve Ritual; Major General, D. E. P. Miller, US Marine Corps,
32, K...C...C...H..., Director of Plans, USMC Headquarters, speaking on
the drug problem and the military's no-nonsense approach to it;
Ill... Allen E. Coles, 33, Personal Representative, Orient of
Oklahoma, describing the Oklahoma Rite's very effective fund-
raising program; Ill... W. Gene Sizemore, 33, discussing recent
developments in Education and Americanism Programs; Ill... Dick
Fletcher, 33, PGM, Executive Secretary, Masonic Services
Association, explaining the Task Force Report, Part II; and Ill...
John R. Graham, 33, President, Graham Communications, motivating
the Brethren with his dynamic presentation defining Masonic
leadership.
After breaking for a delicious home-cooked lunch in the
Cathedral's impressive Crystal Banquet Hall, the participants
divided into three groups and then attended, in turn, three smaller
discussion sections on Ritual, led by Ill... Downs; fund raising, led
by Ill... Cole and Ill... Robert G. Davis, Secretary, Guthrie,
Oklahoma, Bodies; and public relations, led by Ill... Graham. The
opportunity for one-on-one questions and answers was eagerly
embraced by the Brethren at each of the three fifty-minute
sessions.
A late afternoon wrap-up session concluded the working portion
of the South Central Sector Workshop and gave an opportunity for
attending S...G...I...G...'s and Deputies to address the participants and
for the participants to bring up matters of special interest to
them.
During this busy day for the Brethren, their wives enjoyed a
heart-touching, personally guided tour of the Scottish Rite
Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas and a colorful visit to
the city's modern Galleria shopping mall.
After the busy schedule of the day's events, everyone
attending the South Central Workshop was pleased to be hosted that
evening in true Texas style by Inspector Hilburn at a delightful
reception, dinner and entertainment featuring the light humor and
beautiful harmonies of an excellent barbershop quartet.
Taking advantage of the occasion, Grand Commander Kleinknecht
presented personally signed and dedicated copies of the art print
"Time for Lodge" to the Brethren of in recognition
of their outstanding gain in Scottish Rite membership. Also, the
Orient of Texas presented the Grand Commander a special token of
their appreciation of his leadership, a beautiful bronze head of an
American eagle mounted on a handsome walnut swivel base. Sculpted
in l982 by Ill... Donald H. Wills, 33, of the Dallas Bodies, and
named "Our Symbol of Freedom," the statue is a masterpiece of
detail and a moving evocation of patriotic sentiment. It will be
placed on permanent display as part of the Kleinknecht collection
in the House of the Temple.
The Southeast Sector Workshop, held in West Palm Beach, April
20-21, followed the same general pattern of the South Central
Sector Workshop, and under the leadership of Ill... Robert L. "Bob"
Goldsmith, 33, S...G...I...G... in Florida, it was every bit as cordial,
effective and enjoyable as its Texas counterpart. Inspector
Goldsmith's theme for the Florida Rite is "TOTAL INVOLVEMENT--
EVERYONE" and this was immediately evident upon arrival when
Inspector Goldsmith personally met the Workshop's leaders and
chauffeured them to the Palm Hotel, site of the Workshop, in his
own car. And you guessed it. On his car he carried the logo TOTAL
INVOLVEMENT--EVERYONE."
Other Florida Brothers who went far out of their way to make
the Workshop a success were: Ill... James H. Kirby, 33,
Representative, Lake Worth; Ill... Harold C. Detling, 33,
Representative, Pensacola; and Ill... Donald B. Day, Secretary, Lake
Worth. Typical of the hospitality extended to all participants by
everyone associated with the Southeast Sector Workshop, Ill... Day
offered a special tour to the nearby Lake Worth Temple to view the
magnificent mural "The Building of King Solomon's Temple." Among
those gratefully accepting the offer were Ill... David Kruger, 33,
S...G...I...G... in Virginia; Ill... James R. Rogers, 33, S...G...I...G... in
Alabama, and Dr. John W. Boettjer, 32, K...C...C...H..., managing editor
of The Scottish Rite Journal.
At the Workshop itself, in addition to the conference leaders
noted above, Ill... Joe R. Manning, Jr., 33, Grand Master, The
International Supreme Council, Order of DeMolay, spoke on youth as
Freemasonry's most vital resource, and Ill... Meade lead the
afternoon conferences on Ritual. During the Saturday session, a
delightful ladies program included luncheon and a visit to the
beautiful and historic winter home in West Palm Beach of the great
American entrepreneur Henry M. Flagler.
Similarly, the ladies as well as the conference participants
fully enjoyed the Workshop's elegant banquet on the evening of
April 21. Informal comments by the several S...G...I...G...'s and Deputies
attending were warmly received, and Grand Commander Kleinknecht
honored three Valleys--Mobile, Key West, and Tallahassee--for their
gains in membership by presenting them with personally inscribed
copies of the art print "Time for Lodge." The evening's
festivities concluded with a wonderful choral concert by the
Chamber Singers under the direction of Jack Jones featuring many
traditional melodies in special arrangements, plus a lovely medley
entitled "American Tapestry."
Both the South Central Sector and Southeast Sector Workshops
were excellent meetings that fulfilled their promise of "setting
the pace" for Scottish Rite achievement in the years ahead.
Congratulations to everyone involved and, in particular, to each
Workshop's host, Ill... Sam E. Hilburn, 33, in Texas, and Robert L.
Goldsmith, 33, in Florida. Well done one and all!
