The Executive Board
Annual Meeting, February 1 7, 1 994

The President of The Philalethes Soci-
ety, Wallace McLeod, called the annual
meeting of the Executive Board to order
at 7:30 p.m. in the Hotel Washington,
Washington, DC. There were present:
Forrest D. Haggard, FPS, First Vice
President; Royal C. Scofield, FPS, Sec-
ond Vice President; Allen E. Roberts,
FPS, Executive Secretary; Henry G.
Law, FPS, Treasurer; Charles S.
Guthrie, FPS, Editor; Robert G. Davis,
FPS, Second Vice President-elect; Nel-
son C. King, MPS, Chairman of Mem-
bership; Keith A. Hinerman, MPS,
Project Secretary. The Reverend Doctor
Haggard opened the meeting with
prayer.

It was noted, and reaffirmed, that writ-
ers of viable articles, as judged by the
Editor, the Chairman of Literature
Committee, and the Executive Secre-
tary, shall receive a year's free dues in the
Society. It was also determined that the
officers of the Society shall be reim-
bursed for their travel expenses while on
official business for the Society if these
are not paid by others. Out-of-pocket
expenses for the several officers were ad-
justed.

A publishing organization had re-
quested permission to contact every
member of The Philalethes Society re-
questing biographical information in
order to publish a roster of the member-
ship. It said there would be no cost to the
Society. When pressed, it said it sold
books to the membership for a cost of
"somewhere" around S80. The Board
feared this could get out of hand. It,
therefore, rejected the offer.

The report of the finances as submitted
by the Executive Secretary was adopted;
the proposed budget for 1994 was ap-
proved.

The reports of "Jerry Marsengill
Chapter" of Kansas City, Kansas, and
"Minnesota Chapter" were accepted,
and Charters were ordered to be issued
to them.

The President-elect noted his desire to
selectJosephA. Walkes,Jr., Presidentof
The Phylaxis Society of Prince Hall Ma-
sons, as an Honorary Fellow of The
Philalethes Society. This was approved.
Making him a Life Member of The
Philalethes Society was discussed and
approved. Item: Over 20 years ago
Brother Walkes had been rejected for
membership in this Society by the then
officers. He subsequently gathered to-
gether interested Prince Hall researchers
and writers and established the Phylaxis
Society, which, along with its magazine,
is well-established.

For several weeks members of Corner-
stone Chapter of The Philalethes Soci-
ety, and who participate on the Masonic
Forum on CompuServeR, have been
working on a brochure that is expected
to create interest in this electronic media
and The Philalethes Society. The Board
agreed to pay a reasonable cost for the
printing and distribution of the finished
brochure.

Charles S. Guthrie, FPS, Editor of The
Philalethes, submitted his resignation ef-
fective with the completion of the De-
cember issue. He cited his agreement to
write two books for other organizations
and the time necessary to do this job as
his reason. It was with regret that his
resignation was accepted. The search for
an Associate Editor will begin im-
mediately.

The out-going President, Wallace
McLeod, was heartily praised and
thanked for his leadership during the
past two years, and for his years of ser-
vice to the Society. He has agreed to
serve the Society in several capacities.
