Hoover on Courage
Courage is the mental and spiritual discipline which seeks
out the truth and serves the cause of justice. It is the
unconquerable fortitude which is vital to the preservation and
perpetuation of a free society. It is the loneliness of
leadership in time of crisis. It is the willingness to risk
failure to advance the cause of mankind. It is the dedication of
the public servant who supports an unpopular cause for the common
good.
Courage is the unselfishness of parents who through love and
wisdom shape the character of their children. It is the tenacity
of young people who strive to grow and learn and become useful
citizens. It is the gallantry of the fighting man who serves his
country in the shadow of death. It is the fear that does not
succumb to fright in time of peril.
Courage is the priceless ingredient of character that
enabled thirteen colonies to become the greatest Nation on the
face of the earth.

                                   J. Edgar Hoover, Director
F.B.I.
