WHEN IS A PRESBYTERIAN A PRESBYTERIAN?
                           A CORRECTION

The article "The Presbyterian Church in America Takes Aim
Against Masons" by Dr. Jack D. Forest (September 1991) failed to
accent one important fact. The Presbyterian Church in America,
which he describes as anti-Masonic, is NOT the mainline
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), which is, with some 3 million
members, the largest Presbyterian church in America. The
Presbyterian Church in America was founded by a group of
dissidents who, for various reasons, broke away from the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) some years ago. IT DOES NOT
REPRESENT the views or theology of the majority of Presbyterians
in this country.

I have been an ordained Presbyterian (U.S.A.) pastor for almost
25 years, and I was for seven years the Stated Clerk of our local
Presbytery. I have been a Mason for 31 years and a 32 Scottish
Rite Mason (Omaha, Nebraska, Scottish Rite Bodies) for much of
that time as well as a member of the Order of Eastern Star and,
more recently, the Shrine.

In all my years, I have never heard the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) or its predecessor denominations make any derogatory
remarks or take any official actions regarding Masons. I have
many Masons in the congregation I serve. They are among the most
loyal and devoted members of my congregation, Peace Presbyterian
Church, and experience no conflict between the Craft and
Presbyterianism. This is true, I believe, of nearly every
American Presbyterian, perhaps even among the rank and file
members of the dissident The Presbyterian Church in America.
