LEROY S. AXLAND, 33

It is with deep sorrow that we record the sudden and
unexpected passing of Illustrious LeRoy S. Axland, Sovereign
Grand Inspector General in Utah on January 7, l990, in Salt Lake
City, due to a heart condition. Throughout his life as a Mason
and especially as the Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in
Utah in l981, he accomplished much for the benefit of the Craft,
and his appointment as S...G...I...G... in Utah, effective
October 18, l989, was seen as the threshold of even greater
achievements for the Scottish Rite in "the Beehive State" and
America. Please see the article devoted to Ill... Axland in the
January, l990, issue of The Scottish Rite Journal for a summary
of Brother Axland's truly outstanding career as a lawyer, civic
leader and Freemason.
Ill... Francis W. Douglas, Past S...G...I...G... in Utah,
and Ill... Lowell C. Jensen, 33, S...G...I...G... in Idaho,
accompanied by their Ladies, represented Sov...Gr...Cmdr... C.
Fred Kleinknecht, 33, at the service for Ill... Axland on
January 10, l990, in the Salt Lake City Masonic Temple. Fitting
tributes to Brother Axland were given by M...W... Blaine Simons,
Past Grand Master in Utah, and Supreme Court Justice and Brother
Stewart M. Hanson. The Grand Lodge funeral service was very well
conducted with Ill... Douglas acting as Chaplain. Many Masons
were among the more than 400 mourners, including the Honorable
Norman H. Bangerter, Governor of Utah, who attended the service
and offered their condolences to Ill... Axland's bereaved widow,
Charlotte. Many Brothers commented that it was the largest show
of respect they had ever seen for a Mason in Utah.
Surely this is evidence of the exceptional ability and
dedication Ill... Brother LeRoy Axland expended in service to his
family, church, state, and Freemasonry. His loss is a burden
that weighs heavily on the heart of every person who knew this
great and good man. It is also a challenge for us to continue
the Masonic work he left for our hands to complete.
