Alice Ferguson Jenkins has always been fascinated by eagles.
"Eagles are awesome," she says, "as American as apple pie or the
flag!" Certainly a high-flying eagle is an apt symbol for her
life, but just "getting off the ground" wasn't easy. From age 3
1/2 to 10 years, Alice Jenkins was treated in a Masonic hospital.
Making do was a hard lesson for one so young, but "at that age, I
learned to be an independent, self-thinking person," she asserts.
And self-taught. During the last four years, for instance,
Mrs. Jenkins without instruction taught herself to paint in oil
and acrylic. Her first set of paints came from her husband, Bud,
who didn't know what to get Alice for Christmas in l985. Her
daughter suggested a paint set. The rest, as they say, is
history.
To date, she has produced 118 paintings during free days and
weekends away from her hours on the night shift at the United
States Post Office in Paducah, Kentucky. Pictured on the facing
page is her premier print, "Let Freedom Reign," image size 16 by
21 inches, limited signed edition of 600. Even though it is her
first effort in this art form, the work has been quite
successful. The Commander of the 101st Airborn Division, for
instance, ordered one to hang in the 101st Airborne Museum in
Deerfield, Michigan.
Mrs. Jenkins, remembering the help Freemasonry gave her when
she was a child, contributed print Number 33 (bless her!) to The
Supreme Council, 33, and Sovereign Grand Commander Kleinknecht
is pleased to add his words to her work on the facing page.
Persons wishing to obtain a copy of "Let Freedom Ring" ($25
postpaid) may contact Alice Ferguson Jenkins by writing to her at
Lakeview Church Road, Rt. 7, Box 618, Benton, Kentucky 42025.
