While Dio is one of the lesser known 80's metal bands, their style of heavy metal added much to the genre, and to the sound of 80's rock in general. What makes the band standout is not exceptional guitar playing, or a distinct voice. Rather, it is the use of the electric keyboard and creative, interesting lyrics. Ronnie James Dio, the lead singer for the band, and its namesake, first began to experiment with the synthensizer when he replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath. Dio stayed with Black Sabbath for four years, then decided to go out on his own, folowing in the foot steps of past Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne. Dio's first independant release showed signs of Sabbath influence, although the keyboard and lyrics were unique. While most metal bands were singing about the cold war and nuclear war (Metal Church, Megadeth) Dio chose to focus on the fantasy world of dragons and wizards. This is most evident in his second release, "Sacred Heart". Dio proved to be a new chapter in heavy metal, and gave the music a whole new perspective. |
