Stories my Father told me.. this is another one that used to amuse him quite a lot, and it was always trotted out for the benefit of visitors to our home. tkb348
On one of Dad's early voyages, his ship arrived at Port Said at the entrance to the Suez Canal. This was his first visit to Egypt and the canal which linked the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. An official of the Suez Canal Company met the ship as it approached and called out in his official voice, "What's the name of your ship?" "Llandudno!" came the reply from the bridge, while James watched and listened to this exchange. "What is the name of your ship?" came the voice once more from the quayside, this time sounding a little puzzled. "Llandudno!" shouted the voice from the bridge. There was a long pause as the official pondered what to say. "You don't know the name of your ship????" he asked.

These are the entries from the 1st page of his Discharge Book. It was issued to him on completion of his 4yr apprenticeship in July 1901. I had the privilege to look at the Ships Crew List for this voyage on the SS Llandudno. These lists are in the Glamorgan Records Office in Cardiff where the documents relating to Evan Thomas Radcliffe have been kept since the company ceased trading. On my visit in October 2002, I was able to donate this discharge book to the Archive when I went to look at the records. It was a fascinating experience to see my father's signature on documents that had been out of sight for 100 years. Other documents including the Certificate of Indentures have been donated to the National Museum of Wales.
