Overview:
The Capellan Confederation has
always been a resource poor nation due in large part to the disastrous economic
policies of it’s government. Surrounded by five potentially hostile nations (Terran,
Davion, Marik, Canopus, and Taurian) the comparatively small Capellan navy
developed some interesting tactical solutions. It was during the Age of war
that legendary Liao naval commander Jurdan Chang developed his “integration
tactics” that became a trademark of the Capellan Navy. A young Captain Chang
frequently ordered aggressive boarding assaults which resulted in several
captured enemy warships. Chang used these captured ships to directly augment
his own forces as well as to carry out other more covert missions (Editor’s
Note: These missions would include scouting enemy systems, diversionary attacks
on other powers not involved in hostilities against Capellan enemies, capturing
other assets for Liao use, and a host of other sneak operations which I can’t
even begin to describe). Chang was eventually promoted to Admiral in charge of
the Capellan Navy by Chancellor Stephen Liao in 2427. Under his direction the
Capellan Navy designed the Garami class Frigate which was named for an ancient
oriental weapon that roughly translated means entangler.
Capabilities:
The Garami was designed by the Capellan Navy to facilitate the integration tactics of Admiral Jurdan Chang. The Frigate was the first Capellan warship to use the Type III (or Modern) Fusion Engine that enabled it achieve an impressive 3Gs of thrust at maximum acceleration. Fitted with over one thousand tons of armor the designers were sure that the Garami could accomplish her main mission against almost any opponent. The forward mounting of four Heavy Naval PPCs and eighteen Naval Laser 55s was it’s main armament that aided the Garami in quickly disabling any warship of the time. Sixteen Naval Laser 45s supported these main guns while destroying enemy dropships. To defend against fighters and small craft the vessel was armed with sixty four Large Lasers and forty four Small Lasers (Editor’s Note: Because of it’s main armament point defense was weakened in the nose of the ship). The Garami also mounted the latest sensor suite to locate enemy targets. The vessel’s main weapon may have come in the form of an entire reinforced regiment of marines (5 battalions plus) that mainly captured enemy ships. These marines were transported to their target by one of the Garami’s four dropships, thirty two small craft, or in some extreme cases 280 lifepods. A Capellan aerospace wing of 39 fighters supported these boarding actions and could dispatch with most significant opposition. Following an enemy ship’s capture 200 specialized repair techs were transported over to get the vessel back to Capellan territory for full repair. The ten percent of the ship reserved for cargo and five thousand tons of fuel carried by the Garami also aided these salvage operations. For the nearly 1,700 personnel stationed on board four large Grav Decks each about 120 meters in diameter helped with rest and relaxation.
Deployment:
The Garami served in the
Capellan Navy for almost four hundred years through the Age of War, the
Reunification War, and even the Succession Wars. Despite capturing ample
numbers of foreign warships the Garami was gradually phased out following the
Reunification War and replaced by a new Liao frigate. The Star League purchased
five ships while fifty other vessels were eventually mothballed by the
Confederation. One of these Star League vessels apparently survived the Amaris
Coup and the Exodus Civil War. This Garami is currently in the large Snow Raven
cache fleet. The fifty mothballed Garami’s were reactivated just prior to the 1st
Succession War but all were lost during the savage conflict. Recently the
Marian Hegemony with Word of Blake assistance and Capellan approval has
purchased one of these Succession War era derelicts planning on renovating it.
Depending on Marian success the Confederation may also authorize a more
ambitious recovery program.
