That's What Matters

Michael casually strolled up to Maria in the hallways. "You up to going to the Valentine's dance? Because if you need a date, I'll offer my services and give you a date." He said it so nonchalantly, like it didn't matter one bit, but deep inside he desperately wanted to take her.

A smirk curled up on Maria's mouth, she was going to enjoy this. "Sorry Michael, I've got a date that night, someone already beat you to asking me to the dance, I'm going with Adam Coughlin. He at least had the decency to ask me before the day before Valentine's Day. Sorry, Mikey.

She didn't really intent to make it sound as harsh as she had said it. She didn't truly want to hurt his feelings, just make him feel a little pain for all that he had put her through. But when she saw his eyes, she knew she had hurt him, and she didn't really want to, at all. "Oh of course, bye." Was all he said. He turned his back and fled away from her. Mentally chastising that Adam guy.

Maria felt horrible. Sure the main reason she had accepted with Adam was to make Michael jealous, I mean he wasn't as nearly as cute as Michael was and he didn't have Michael's...'difference'. She looked at him as he crossed the schoolyard.

At the Crashdown...
"Max I need your help." Michael said as he waltzed right into the Crashdown and grabbed and pulled Max out of his chair away from Liz and into a private booth.

Max looked dumbfounded as Michael fiddled with his hands. "Michael, you do realize that what you did was incredibly rude! I was in the middle of asking Liz to the dance, you have the worst timing!"

Michael slammed his hands onto the table. "She already has a date." He stated bluntly.

"Who? Liz? She has a date with who!? Not Kyle?" Max's eyes turned to fear.

He shook his head. "No, not Liz, Maria, she already has a date to the dance, what am I going to do, I mean she is suppose to be MY date, not Adam Coughlin's date. Doesn't she know that?" Michael was mumbling.

Max gave him a curious look. "You gave up your rights to Maria when you broke off all ties with her. You can't expect her to wait around for you. But if you really want my help, make it up to her, out-do the other guy. Give her a v-day present that would sweep her off her feet, something she wouldn't expect from you."

Michael bit his lip. "You know Maxwell, that is a good idea! I can do that, Thanks Max." He grabbed his jacket and ran out of the cafe.

Day of the Dance....
:Ding Dong:

Maria opened the door to her house, all dressed up in a simple spaghetti strap dress, which was cut off a little below her knee. Adam's jaw dropped about 2 feet down. "Wow, Maria, you look, you look spectacular, Um, here these are for you, Happy Valentine's Day!" He handed Maria a heart shaped box of chocolates.

Maria graciously took them. "Oh, Adam, that was so sweet. Thank You." she ducked in her house, placed the chocolate's on her counter. "You read to go?"

"Sure am." Adam said as he held his arm out for her.

At the Dance...
"I'm going to go get some punch, you want any Adam?" Maria asked politely. Adam was probably the most boring person in the whole world. 'This is worse than Math class.' She thought to herself.

He shook his head. "No, I'm good." He screamed above the loud music.

Maria walked over to the concession stand where she saw Liz talking to Max. "HAVE YOU SEEN MICHAEL ANYWHERE, DID HE COME?" Maria screamed over the incredibly loud disco music that was now playing.

Liz shook her head. "NO, SORRY MARIA, I HAVEN'T, OH WAIT, THERE HE IS, OVER THERE." She pointed her index finger over by the door where Michael just walked in.

Suddenly Mariah Carey's song Heartbreaker just blared through the speakers. "It's not or never." she thought to herself.

'Gimme your love
Oh you look so good
I don't wanna let you
and although I should
I can't leave you alone'

Maria walked over to Adam. "Look Adam, I'm going to say this quickly, I can't do this, I'm in the middle of a complicated relationship now and I just can't do this" She move her finger from herself to him, showing the two of them. Maria walked away from him, with Adam standing there with a confused and hurt expression on his face.

'Heartbreaker you got the best of me
but I just keep coming back incessantly
oh why, did you have to run your games on me
I should have known right from the start
you'd go and break my heart.'

"Hey." Maria said as she walked up to Michael.

"Hi, Happy Valentine's Day." He said to her, looking around the room, nervously.

"Yeah you too." Maria fiddled with her dress, not knowing what to say.

"So, where's the stud Adam?" Michael stated that rather abruptly.

Maria laughed. "Me and Adam, well I don't think we're going to work out. Ever." She looked him straight in the eye as she said that too.

He gave her one of his Cheshire smiles. "And why is that?" Deep down he knew the answer, but he wanted to hear her say it.

Maria dropped her head and looked at her feet, then she looked back into Michael's eyes. "Because, I kinda like someone else at the moment." She gave a nervous laugh at her own statement.

He grabbed her hand. "Come on, I have something I want to show you." He led her out to the parking lot where he and Maria got in her car. He took the driver's seat and her in the passenger seat.

"Michael, where are you taking me, or should I say abducting me...again." She grabbed his hand for a moment and then let go.

"You'll see, it's a surprise." 20 minutes later they arrived at some motel.

Maria took one look at it as soon as she stepped out of the car and said, "Let's make this three times you've dragged me into some motel. But that's ok."

Michael entwined his fingers with her as he headed to the room he reserved. "Go ahead open the door." He urged as Maria gave him a suspicious look. But she did as she was told and opened the door. Suddenly a bunch of balloons flew out into her face. When she came to realization she figured that Michael filled the whole room with heart shaped balloons.

A smile appeared on her face. "Happy Valentine's day Maria." Michael said.

She couldn't stop smiling, "Oh Michael, thank you." She wrapped her arms around his neck, then she gave him the sweetest kiss imaginable. He returned it in full.
