Maria woke up from her slumber
casually. Although today she was on a mission, the same mission she had been on
all summer long, but today, it was going to work. What was her mission you may
be asking yourself. Her mission was to not think about Michael. 'Easier said
than done.' She thought to herself.
As usual she ate her breakfast and
then sought out to do any chores her mother might have left taped to the
fridge.
Sure enough, there was the little
white paper in Amy's chicken scratch handwriting.
'Maria,
Please do some grocery shopping
for me, I left 40$ on the counter top, thanks a bunch honey, I'll be home later
today, after closing up the shop. Thank You
Love,
Mom'
"Grocery shopping it
is." She said to herself. She went back to her room, dressed herself
appropriately, then grabbed her keys and left for the Supermarket.
'2 hours, I haven't thought of
Michael.' She thought to herself as she pushed the shopping cart around and put
items in it. Then she came to the seasonings and sauces isle. "Tabasco
sauce." She said aloud. "Damn." She muttered as she found
herself thinking of Michael.
<< "Ok, what's with the
Tabasco sauce? >>
<< "Sweet and
spicy" >>
<< "Are you two
flirting?" >>
<< "I wish you would
just try and make me feel better." >>
<< "That was to calm
you down. >>
"Dammit Maria, don't start
thinking of Michael Guerin again, remember, it's your mission."
<< "Liz, I'm on a
mission, from here on, I will not think of Michael and how he left and said 'I
love you' and made the monumental mistake of not saying it back. Nope, I won't
think of it." >>
<< "Ok, right,
sure." >>
While at the checkout counted
Maria was flipping through the latest 'People' magazine as she waited. She came
across a picture of David Ducovny 'Wow, he looks like Michael..." She said
in her head. She immediately slammed the magazine closed and placed it back on
the shelf.
"Ahh...no Michael here."
She said once she entered her home. Quickly she put the groceries away and went
up to her room to read her summer reading books.
She stopped the minute she walked
in the room and looked out her window. For some reason, a part of her still
expected to see a wet and dripping Michael out there, waiting with his puppy
dog eyes to come inside and be safe. "Hopeless!" She screamed as she
flung herself on her bed and covered her head with a pillow. "I am never
going to forget Michael." She said into the pillow.
Suddenly the phone rang, and a
chill ran through her. "Hello?" She said into the receiver. She heard
someone gulp nervously "Hello?" She said again even though she knew
who it was. The she heard the light 'click' on the other end and she knew he
had hung up. "Well, at least he's just as confused and anguished as I
am."
She stayed in her room the rest of
that afternoon, just sitting there, or lying there, contemplating.
<< "Maybe because I
love you too much." >>
<< Silence >>
"You idiot Deluca, at least
you could have said 'Love you too.' Or 'I love you too much also.' Even a
simple 'ditto' would have been better than nothing. Michael finally shows his
emotions, and opens up and you take this grand opportunity to say
nothing." She was so mad at herself she could scream.
At around 5pm the phone rang
again. "Hello." She said. Nothing, there was nothing on the other end
but a slight breathing sound. "Hello." She said again. Then she
thought for a minute. 'I've been saying nothing too much.' She waited a few
more seconds. "Michael I know it's you." She said into the receiver.
"How did you know that?"
He asked shyly. She could tell she had stumped him.
"Instinct, now you want to
tell me why you call and say nothing." She asked him.
There was a pause on the other
end. "I don't know, I mean I call and plan to say something, but I end up
saying nothing."
"Been there, done that."
She muttered.
"Huh?" he asked.
She shook her head. "Never
mind."
Then came that long awful
uncomfortable silence between them. Neither knew what to say.
"Well, I'm going to get going
and go. Bye." Michael said, trying to cover up and end the awkwardness.
Taking a deep breath Maria
answered "Michael"
"Yeah." He said.
She took another deep breath.
"I love you too."
Maria couldn't see it, but Michael
was smiling on the other end of the phone line. "Good to know, bye."
He said calmly before hanging up and smiling some more.
Maria also hung up the phone.
"Better late than never." She said to herself.
THE END!!
