Summary: Uh Oh!! Another car accident only this time with Maria and

Michael...

In a little red Jetta, Michael and Maria sped down the roads of Roswell New Mexico.

"You looked like you could use a day off from school that's all." Michael answered when Maria asked him why they were driving down highways when they should be in school.

Maria nodded her head. "You're right Michael, my life is big hole of stress right now. I mean my grades aren't doing exceptionally well, my mom is seeing Sheriff Valenti, which creeps me out beyond belief, and I just don't feel relaxed at any part of my day...maybe when I sleep but that's about it. Ok, I'm sorry I'm talking your ear off." Maria apologized and stared out the window.

Michael who was driving Maria's car slowed down a bit so he could turn his head to her. "No, It's ok, I mean it's the least I could do for you after what you did for me the other night. Letting me crash at your house and all. Think of this as me saying 'thank you' to you. We both know how upset you got last time when I didn't thank you." Michael gave Maria a smile hoping it would cheer her up a bit. She really looked like she was in a slump.

She turned to Michael and tilted her head towards him. "Yes I remember. All I meant by that was that you could have said a little thank you, that's all. But it's all water under the bridge now."

"Mmm Hmm" Was the only response Michael gave to her. "Oh can I borrow your phone, I just want to leave a message for Max at home so he knows where I was and you, he can tell Liz where we were. You know, so they don't worry. Max has this thing where he worries more than he should sometimes about me." He motioned to Maria's bag, which she flopped on the floor of the car when they got in.

Maria gave Michael a questioning look. "I didn't picture you as the type who would check in... hmm...oh well. I don't think I brought my phone with me though. I might have hold on." She reached down to dig through her purse.

Michael kept glancing from the road to Maria then back to the road then to Maria. "I'm not checking in with Max, when he gets home from school I know he will want to know where I was seeing now that I'm on my own, I just don't want him to send out a search party for us, that's all. And you did bring your phone I think I remember seeing it when you practically threw your bag on the floor. Maybe it wasn't a phone but it looked like one. You girls keep everything but the kitchen sink in those bags of yours." Michael forced the smile back that was starting to creep on his mouth. He didn't want Maria to think he was enjoying this as much as he was.

"That's because we're always organized and men aren't. If men would get some kind of a contraption holder like a purse or a bag then you wouldn't be so disorganized. You know I really don't think I brought it, Oh! Here it is! I found it." Maria proudly held up the phone.

Grabbing the phone Michael readjusted his hold on the steering wheel. "Well it's about time." He dialed the numbers to Max's house.

With his shoulder holding the phone he heard. "Hi, this is the Evan's residence, we're not home at the moment so leave your name and number and we'll call you back as soon as possible, thank you."

Michael gave a quick smile to Maria, taking his eyes away from the road for a minute. "Hi, Max it's Michael I just wanted to tell you that me and Maria went for a drive today and we'll--" Michael was cut off by a sudden scream and lots of flying glass.

"MICHAEL LOOK OUT!" It was Maria's voice. ::SMASH:: A Car had come out from an intersection where his light was red, and Michael had the right of way. The driver must not have been thinking clearly. The car came and hit on Maria's side.

Michael slowly started to wake up, shaking himself off. "Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit." He kept saying to himself as he looked at Maria. She was lying there lifeless. Michael looked past the broken glass that was once a window to see that the other car had gotten away. "Great." He muttered to himself.

"Oh my God, Maria." Was all he said as he looked at her.

Finally mustering up enough courage he touched neck to check for a pulse. "Oh my God" He said to himself again.

For a few moments Michael concentrated mostly on his breathing and making sure that he actually was breathing. He touched Maria's neck once more to make sure what he felt was real.

She had a pulse, a slow, weak, but steady pulse. He lightly tapped her face. "Maria, Maria, can you hear me? Come on Maria, can you wake up? Open your eyes? Can you even slightly move?" Michael closed his eyes for a moment before running a hand through his hair.

Suddenly he remembered the phone. He could call for help, yes, that's what he could do. He looked to the floor. "Damnit!" He muttered as he saw it crumpled up and broken on the floor. Probably because of the car crash. He moved his arms, then his legs just to make sure any part of him wasn't paralyzed or stuck on something. Michael tried to open the door, but it seemed to be caught on something and he didn't have the strength to try and lift it up and push it harder.

He looked towards Maria again, she was just lying there so lifeless. "Maria, please, just wake up! I can't heal you, I'm in no state of mind to do that and you know how bad I am with them. Knowing me, I'd set your hair on fire. Then you'd really have it in for me." Michael pushed a stray piece of hair that was in her eyes around her ear. "God Damnit Maria, if there was ever a time for you to argue with me, come on, let it be now! All I need from you is one insult, some sign that your not dead inside. Take your best shot eh? You can mock my hair, my clothes, my living situation, my IQ, the way I need to be a loner, something, anything." He was fighting a losing battle.

'All I can do is wait now' He thought, which was true. He couldn't get out, he was too weak and too emotional to use his powers, and he had no phone. He leaned against the 'would be' back of his seat and sighed.

"I don't know Isabel, but your right we should get a bell for him." Max said as they walked into their home after school.

"Max, I thought he told you he was going to try and come to more classes? What happened to that? He can't just skip school like he used to anymore, he's on his own, he has no alibi, and needs an education. He can't blame Hank anymore." Isabel saw the look Max was giving her. A look that said 'Thanks for stating the obvious.' "Well I'm sorry Max, I just worry about him that's all."

As soon as Isabel finished her sentence the phone rang. Isabel picked up the receiver. "Hello?"

It was Liz, "Yeah Hi, Isabel, look have you seen Maria at all today, because she wasn't in any classes I had with her and she didn't come to lunch. After school I called her to see if she was sick and her and nobody answered, and I know her mom is working. I was just wondering." Liz kind of trailed off her last sentence.

"Hey, Max It's Liz on the phone." Max was reading the mail, his head went straight up after he hearing Liz's name. Isabel laughed at that, "She wants to know if we've seen Maria, that's all."

"No, tell her I haven't seen her." Max resumed through the mail he was looking at while Isabel got off the phone with Liz.

"Hey, Max there is a message on the machine." Isabel said as she pushed the 'message' button on the machine.

On the machine speaker they heard. "Hey Max, it's Michael."

"You see, he's fine." Max said as he got himself a glass of juice.

"I just wanted to tell you that me and Maria went for a drive today and we'll--" Michael's voice was cut off by a very loud noise. Then they heard "MICHAEL LOOK OUT". Then silence.

Max and Isabel gave each other worried glances. "Oh my God." Isabel said to herself and to Max. Max was so stunned he couldn't really speak.

He grabbed his keys, "Come on, we'll pick up Liz tell her what happened to Michael and Maria and then we'll search." Max put a reassuring hand on his sister. "It'll be ok Isabel, they're both strong people." With that they both hurried out to the jeep.

Isabel, Max, and Liz are driving down the highways of Roswell and on some side streets too. "Wait, Isabel, Max, your not making sense, Michael and Maria were together and something happened? I don't get it." Liz was trying to make some logic out of this.

Isabel was getting pissed at Liz's constant questions, "Liz, we told you all we know! Michael left a message on out machine telling us he and Maria were going for a drive today, we heard Maria scream watch out then we heard a crash and their phone probably went dead. Now do you get it?" She snapped.

Liz laid her back against the seat. "Yeah, I get it." She said quietly.

Max gave Isabel an evil look. "Liz, Isabel is just worried, she didn't mean to snap at you. Right Isabel?" Max nudged her arm, pushing for an apology.

Isabel glared at Max, "Yeah, sorry Liz, I'm just edgy, this sort of thing never happens, well it happened once with you and Max, but we got past that thanks to Alex. Let's just find them ok." The three of them silently agreed not to say anything more.

After an hour and half of driving Liz was asleep in the back seat, Isabel and Max had switched seats and Isabel was now driving. Max looked back at Liz and smiled at her sleeping so peacefully. He silently thanked all higher powers that it wasn't Liz that was in that crash. He turned back and looked out onto the road. Isabel pulled off the highway and onto a deserted road that led somewhere in the desert. "Isabel look!" Max pointed out to Maria's car that was about 150 feet ahead of them. "LIZ! Liz, wake up!" Max said to Liz who was starting to stir in her seat.

Isabel picked up speed to get to them faster. Then she quickly stopped the car and all three of them jumped out and ran to Maria's so-called car.

Max was the first to look inside the broken glass. "Michael? Maria? Can any of you hear me." Max said as he saw the two figures scrunched up inside the little car.

The car moved a bit as Michael slowly moved along. As the time passed he had lost more and more energy to do anything. He could barely even move now. And Maria was still in the same condition she was in a few hours ago. "Max...Max" Michael managed to breath out.

Max quickly turned his head to Isabel and Liz. "He's alive, Michael's alive." Max was so relieved, but there was still Maria.

"What about Maria?" Liz asked, more concerned now because Maria didn't seem to be talking or moving, or else Max would have told them. "Is she alive? Is she in there Max?"

Squinting his eyes, Max looked further into the car. With a swipe of his hand he open the banged up door of the car. It looked like it was ready to fall off. The door was on Michael's side so Max tried to drag Michael out first. "Isabel, Liz can you help me, he's kind of heavy." Max saw as he heaved at getting Michael out.

Liz and Isabel walked over and grabbed a leg and an arm and pulled him out. "Help Maria." Was the only thing Michael said.

Once Michael was safely on the ground Liz looked inside and screamed, "Oh my god Maria! Maria!! Oh God!" Max walked over and put his hands on her shoulders to try and calm her down.

Liz just tried to remember to breath in and out after seeing her best friends, such a mess in the passenger seat. 'I could really use some cyprus oil about now.' Liz thought as she secretly smiled at her friends wacky ways. Maria and all her oils and remedies. 'She just has to be ok.' Lis thought, 'She just has to be'.

Max was already in the car trying to get Maria out, while Isabel patched up Michael. Michael wasn't in bad condition, just some scratches and bruises. But he was pretty traumatized by the whole ordeal. Within 2 minutes Isabel had Michael back to normal again.

Michael stood up and brushed himself off a bit. "How's Maria?" was his first question to be asked.

Max had his arms linked under Maria's arms and he dragged her slowly out of the car. He didn't know if she was even going to make it. "Max? Is she ok? Is she breathing?" Liz asked frantically. Before she knew it a tear or two was rolling down her eyes. She had never seen Maria or anyone in this condition, not even Max in their car crash. She looked so battered and beaten, it made Liz sick to her stomach.

Isabel saw how distraught Liz was, and even though they weren't best of friends Isabel had enough of a heart to know a person in pain. She didn't want to see Liz hurting this much, so she walked over and put an arm around her shoulder while Liz was still stunned looking at Maria.

Meanwhile Michael's heart broke a million times over each and every time he looked at Maria. 'If only I hadn't tried to use the phone, if only I hadn't taken her for a drive, if only I had been smart enough to have seen the car coming.' He blamed himself in each and every way for this.

"I don't think I can heal her using the powers, she looks too bad for it." Max said in defeat, he didn't think his body was ready for that kind of healing.

Michael looked at Max, "Max come on, we have to do something, I mean she might not even make it to the hospital, she's lost a lot of blood throughout the time we were here." He would be damned if he let Maria die right when he was getting close to her.

Letting go of Liz, Isabel turned to the boys. "I think I have an idea." She said as she walked closer to Maria. "What if we all heal her at the same time, you know, we'll each put a hand on her and see if we can do anything."

"Doesn't Maria have to look at you though, she's unconscious!" Liz said to them, getting aggravated at the situation and that her best friend in the whole entire world is in a comatose state right now.

Michael turned to Liz. "Not really, if one of us hold her eyes open then it should still work, just as long as we have some connection to her."

Liz walked over to her friend and knelt down at her head. She used her hand to open her eyes. "Ok Go." Liz said quietly and softly.

Michael put his hands around Maria's head almost cradling it. Max put his hands on her arm and Isabel had her hands on her stomach. They each concentrated hard, harder than normally.

For Isabel and Max it was a normal procedure. But for Michael something was different, Michael saw something, something that only he and Maria could share.

When Michael put his hands on Maria he saw the car crash through her eyes. It seemed to just replay itself over and over again, with images and sounds from when the cars collided.

"It's not working." Isabel said out of breath from the healing. Michael still sat there stunned at his visions. He didn't know why he had to see the crash again when he touched her. It wasn't as if he didn't think about it every millisecond.

Max nodded, "Yeah but I think we gave her enough energy for her to make it to the hospital." Three of them got up, but Michael still stayed crouched next to Maria. "Michael, are you ok?" Max asked him.

Hitting realization Michael nodded in agreement, "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine, let's just get her to the hospital." Michael and Max lifted her up and put her in the jeep.

"I'll call AAA" Isabel chimed in as she reached for her cell phone in her purse.

When they reached the hospital, they quickly raced in a found a wheel chair to place the lifeless Maria in. "I need a doctor, my friend Maria Deluca was in a car accident and she's unconscious right now." Liz said to the nurse at the desk.

The nurse slowly brought her eyes up to Liz's. "She was in a car accident, and she's unconscious, right, fill out these forms while I get a doctor." She said slowly.

Michael walked briskly up to her, "Look, she needs immediate attention, so if you wouldn't mind actually getting up to help save her life, I would appreciate it!" He said loudly and annoyed.

The nurse held her hands up in defeat and walked down the hall to find a doctor.

A few moments later a man who was obviously a doctor walked into the corridor where they were waiting. "Hello, I'm doctor Carson, I'll be taking care of..." He looked quickly at his charts he held in his hands, "...Maria. Now, was anyone with her in this accident?" He asked while other doctors came for Maria and put her on a stretcher and hauled her off down the hallway. Everyone's eyes followed her, including Michael, who was looking at her more intensely than anyone else.

Michael wet his lips and stepped forward, "I was." He said simply.

"Well young man, why don't we check you out also." He was about to urge Michael in when Michael resisted,

"No, No, I'm fine, just concentrate on Maria. Please, I'm ok." The last thing he needed was a doctor checking out his blood samples.

The doctor furrowed his brow, "Are you sure son? I mean it looked like a pretty decent crash." When he saw Michael resist again he said, "Ok then, if your sure. Now I'm going to go give Maria a full examination, please wait here." Then he turned and walked down where Maria was once taken.

Liz walked over to Max and clasped his hand with hers. She needed all the comfort she could get with her best friend in a coma at the moment.

Isabel walked around nervously for a while, "I'm going to call Alex and fill him in on the situation, he is her friend and all." She said as she walked towards the nearest phone booth.

She tapped her foot nervously against the wall till she heard his voice, "Hello?" He asked curiously.

"Hey Alex, It's um, It's Isabel." She said

Alex didn't let her say much, "Oh hey, Isabel, what's up? Haven't talked to you lately." He was about as nervous as she was about talking to her.

She cut him off, "Listen, Alex you need to come down to the hospital. It's Maria, her and Michael were in a car accident, he's ok, but her, well she's pretty bad, and we tried on her, but we couldn't, so you might want to come down and give your support. Liz is sort of freaking out now. I just thought you should know." Isabel gulped in a breath of air.

Standing there stunned at the edge of his kitchen, Alex gripped the phone tighter, "Yeah, yeah, sure Isabel, I'll be right there." He said before hanging up and grabbing his keys.

Liz and Max sat in the chair provided, next to each other, still holding hands. Michael sat about 5 chairs away from them. He was mindlessly looking through magazines, anything to keep his mind off of what had happened, but it was no use. The images he received from Maria and his own experience of the car wreck were now permanently imprinted into his brain.

After about 10 minutes Alex came rushing through the doors. He ran directly to Liz, "God, Liz, how is she?" He asked hugging her.

Liz wiped away another tear. "I don't know Alex, we don't know yet, we haven't heard anything." She hugged him tighter. Then they released and Liz went back to sitting next to Max and Alex went and sat next to Isabel.

She turned her head at Alex and asked, "Are you ok? I mean, I know you were close to Maria and all."

Alex nodded, "Yeah, as long as Maria will be ok, then I'll be ok." He tried to relax in the chair and take in all that was happening.

After awhile in agonizing torture as Alex had described it in his head, Dr. Carson walked out and greeted them. "Well, It seems to me, that Maria should be ok. All the test results that have come back are good and solid. But so far she hasn't come out of her coma yet, which isn't a good sign. So, we can't tell if she has any brain damage yet. We suspect she shouldn't, and all her vital signs are good. She should wake up soon, yet the longer it lasts the worst it could get."

The five of them sat there stunned, the doctors words stung Michael like a spoon dishing his heart out.

Alex looked up at the doctor, "Can we see her?" He asked politely.

"Yes, but one at a time. And when you're with her, talk to her, the sound of your voice may trigger something, talk about anything and everything, just make sure she hears you. We've moved her to the recovery unit, you can find her in room 110. Please one at a time." He reminded then and with that he walked away to help another patient.

Everyone looked around at each other. All wondering who should go first. Everyone wanting to go, but also not wanting to go. Finally Liz spoke up, "I'll go first." She gave Max's hand one last squeeze before getting up and walking down the corridor.

Liz slowly and cautiously walked into Maria's room, room 110. She bit her lip afraid that if she didn't she would scream at every higher power. Then Liz pulled a chair up to sit beside Maria's bed. "Hey Maria." Liz began, just like Maria could actually listen and respond. "It's me, Liz. Look you just have to come out of this, I mean everyone's outside now waiting and hoping for you to come out of this. Max, Alex, Michael, Isabel, are all out there, thinking only of you getting better. I never thought I would say this but I want you to be the stubborn now! Fight for Michael's sake if not for your own. He's out there right now taking all the blame for this and probably killing himself inside." Liz looked away when she heard a knock on the door. She saw Michael standing in the doorway, waiting to come in to see Maria.

"Can I have a minute?" He said as he waited leaning up against the doorframe.

Liz took one more look at Maria quietly said good-bye and then walked out of the room, smiling at Michael as she went to rejoin Max and the others.

Max stood up the moment he saw Liz emerge from the room. "How is she?" He asked.

Liz just went up and hugged him, she needed all the support she could get, her best friend was in a coma, and she just felt so helpless towards it all.

She let go of him and looked him in the eyes. "She looks like she sleeping with a lot of wires on her, I still can't believe this is all happening."  After Max took her back to sit down.

Michael walked in and sat in the seat Liz had once occupied. He took Maria's hand in his own and clasped them together. "I'm sorry, I really am, if I had just been looking where I was going and not at you, things would have turned out differently. But you have to wake up because you have to yell at me, and tell me what an ass I am for doing that to you, and for giving you all these bruises." He waved his hand over her arm and removed a small scratch on her arm. "It's the least I can do." He said to her.

For a moment he thought he saw her eyes flutter, but after a few moments he realized it must have been his imagination. "Damn." He muttered under his breath.

"Excuse me sir, but we need to check up on Miss Deluca." A nurse said as she walked into the room.

Michael at first looked a little irritated that the nurse had disrupted his time with Maria, but he was willing to go along with it. "Yeah, sure." He said, not looking at the nurse. "Bye Maria." He said before he kissed her hand and then left the room.

When he walked out he saw Isabel and Alex getting up, obviously ready to leave. "You guys leaving?" He asked.

Everyone looked at him at once. "Yeah, I'm going to take Isabel home and then I'm going to tell Liz's parents where she is, while Isabel tells her parent's where Max is, and we think it's best that you guys stay here." Alex said as he gathered his coat and made sure Isabel was ready.

"Yeah ok, see-ya guys." Michael said as he sat down in his chair.

Isabel turned around to face Michael, Max, and Liz. "Call us thought, if anything at all happens or if you need us, let's go Alex." Then the two of them headed out the doors.

"Any change?" Liz said as she gave Max's hand a squeeze for support.

Right after she said that a group of doctors and nurses rushed into Maria's room. Michael was the first to jump up and try to find out what was happening. He slightly jogged over there and asked the nearest nurse what was going on. "Please, just wait here." She said calmly.

Michael wondered how she could be so calm in a time of crisis. He tried to see inside her room but the blinds were closed just enough for Michael to be blinded by what was happening. Liz soon after followed by Max walked over to where Michael was standing.

"I can't see a thing." Liz said in defeat. Max wrapped his arm up around her. He really didn't know what to say, he wanted to take all the pain away but this was one circumstance that he just couldn't do it.

Finally after countless minutes had past a nurse emerged from the closed door and walked over to talk to the teenagers. "You're here for Maria Deluca right?"

Michael was getting irritated, all he wanted was to know that she was ok. "Yes we are, just tell us how she is?"

She put her hands up to show him to calm down. "Listen, Maria is awake, she knows who she is, and apparently where she is, but she doesn't know how she got here, which is understandable. From what we know she doesn't have any signs of amnesia or brain damage. Once the doctors are finished with her you all will be able to see you. She has been asking for a specific Michael, would that be you?" She asked pointing to Max.

Michael jumped in, "No, that would be me." He said, pointing the nurse in the right direction. Max and Liz shared a look between each other.

A few minutes later everyone that was in Maria's room came out and the nurse came over and gave Michael, Max, and Liz the 'ok' sign. Even though they were all allowed in, Max and Liz decided Michael should go in first alone.

"Michael." Maria said weakly as she saw him walk him. He stuffed his hands in his pockets, not really knowing what to do.

A smile appeared on her face while she said, "Well Michael, once again you've managed to wreck my life, and this time you literally mad me look bad." She laughed at that, she meant for it to be humorous, Michael didn't laugh though. He just continued to look at her.

"I am sorry, I should have been looking at the road, and not at you. I really messed up this time. Sorry." An apology was all that was coming to his mind.

She nodded her head, "It's ok, really. I know you didn't mean to get in a car accident and I don't blame you. I'm just glad your ok." She reached out for his hand and he grabbed it. It felt good for him to feel her fingers moving around.

"It's funny, I thought you would be biting my head off for this, blaming me, and yelling at me. What happened to you while you were out of it?" For the first time in there he smiled.

Maria pushed herself up a bit on the bed, "Oh, don't worry, you're going to owe me so big for this. Your time will come." She reached her arms out next, searching for a hug somewhere in there, she just really wanted to hug him more than anything.

He allowed himself to take comfort in her arms, letting all his guards down. He just hugged her. "Yeah, ok Maria, I knew there would be punishment for me in there somewhere, what are you going to have me do, clean your toilet with a toothbrush?" he joked with her.

She let him go and look at him. "Oh no, your going to do so much worse, I haven't thought of it yet, but when I do, it will be horrible." They made eye contact and within that contact they knew how much they both needed each other.

The End
