Summary: A
(tongue-in-cheek :) Young Americans/X-Files crossover.
Spoilers: For
Young Americans, through Will Bella Scout Her Mom? As for the X-Files, the case
Mulder refers to is from the first season episode called
"Genderbender." It helps if you've seen it but I hope I've described
what happened well enough so that's not necessary. Other than that episode,
there are no X-Files spoilers.
"Mulder,
just where are we going, and why?" an exasperated Dana Scully asked her
partner. He'd called her at the crack of dawn telling her to fly to Boston,
where he was waiting with a rental car.
"Well,
Scully, there's been a report of someone who appears to be able to change his
or her gender in the town of New Rawley, specifically at a boarding school for
children of some of the richest, most influential people in the country,"
Mulder answered, as he turned the car onto the two lane road that would take
them to the town.
Scully raised
her eyebrows. "And just where did you see this report?"
"On the
Internet, of course."
"Of
course." Scully glanced out the window. "Mulder, do you believe
everything you read on the Internet?"
"Let's just
say I have an open mind. Remember those sex-changing aliens whose victims died
while having sex with them?"
Scully
remembered all too well; she'd nearly been a victim herself. The aliens were
able to change their apparent sex at will and, through their overpowering
pheromones, lure humans to have sex with them without the victim's conscious
consent. Unfortunately, those powerful pheromones also kill the victim.
"It was
right here in Massachusetts that we found them," Mulder continued,
"and they just disappeared without a trace. I've been keeping a lookout
for their reappearance and I have a feeling this may be it."
"But
Mulder, if they did choose to reappear, why would they come back so close to
where we found them the first time? And why would they choose an elite boarding
school?"
"Teenagers
are among the most oversexed of the human species. Plenty of game, shall we
say, and no annoying parents to get in the way."
"Have there
been any reports of deaths?"
"No, not
that I know of."
"Mulder..."
Scully started, obviously skeptical.
"Look,
Scully, maybe the aliens have learned how to get the rush without killing their
victims. I just think we may really be on to something here."
Scully just
sighed.
"Here we
are," Mulder said as he pulled into a parking space near a Friendly's
restaurant. "I think we should interview some of the locals to see if
they've noticed anything unusual. And, I could use a cup of coffee."
Mulder and
Scully entered the nearly empty restaurant and took two seats at the counter,
where two young men were working. The shorter one nodded towards Mulder.
"Lunch or dessert?" he asked.
"We'd just
like some coffee," said Mulder.
The young man
grabbed a couple of cups and set them in front of the duo.
"Regular or
decaf?"
"Regular."
As their coffee
was poured, Mulder and Scully pulled out their badges. "I'm Agent Mulder
and this is Agent Scully. We're with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Mind
if we ask you a few questions?"
The young man
who was serving them glanced at his co-worker. "Uh, no, I guess not."
"Are you
familiar with Rawley Academy?"
"Well, yes,
we go there." He regarded them for a moment before sticking out his hand.
"Scout Calhoun," he said, by way of introduction. Mulder accepted his
outstretched hand.
The co-worker
extended his hand as well. "And I'm Will Krudski."
"Nice to
meet you gentlemen." Mulder regarded Will. "Have we met? Because you
look awfully familiar..."
Will just
shrugged.
"Anyway, as
unusual as this sounds, we've had a possible sighting of a person who may be
able to change his or her gender. Have you seen anything, or possibly heard any
rumors?"
Scout and Will
exchanged uncomfortable glances. "What...where was this sighting?"
asked Scout.
"At Rawley
Academy. Do you have any information on this?"
"Noooo. I
don't know anything. You, Will?"
"Nope.
First I've heard of it."
"Well, if
you hear anything, give us a call." Mulder handed Scout his card.
"Sure
thing," said Scout, smiling uncertainly.
Mulder and
Scully finished their coffees and left. Back inside the car, Mulder said,
"Those guys in there were hiding something; I'm sure of it. And the tall
one? I know I know him from somewhere."
"Well, they
did look uncomfortable."
"So there
could be something here after all, eh, Scully?"
"Perhaps.
But it may not be what we're looking for."
After checking
in at a small, dingy motel at the edge of town, Mulder and Scully arrived at
Rawley Academy. They found their way to the Dean's office, where they had an
appointment to speak with the Dean, a man named Fleming. He seemed quite eager
to help, but said he hadn't heard any rumors or sensed anything unusual going
on. He even called in one of the teachers, a guy named Finn, who apparently
taught English. He said he hadn't heard or seen anything either, then left to
teach a class. As the rest of them were leaving the office, the Dean's eyes
wandered to some students walking in the hallway.
"I'm afraid
I wasn't much help," he said quickly, "but perhaps you should ask a
member of the student body. Hamilton?" he called to a young man.
"Yes?"
"Son, these
are agents from the FBI. They have some questions--maybe you could help them
out. Agents Mulder and Scully, this is my son Hamilton, and his friend Jake
Pratt." The Dean turned to Mulder and Scully. "Now, if you'll excuse
me, I have some other business to attend to. Let me know if I can be of any
more service. Please, why don't you use my office?" He ushered all four of
them into the room and walked out, closing the door behind him.
"So, boys.
We've had a sighting of someone who can change his or her gender. Do you know
anything about this?"
The boys glanced
nervously at each other.
"You two
look a little scared. Is there something you want to share with us?"
Scully asked gently.
"We don't
know anything," said the Dean's son, a strikingly handsome young man with
gorgeous blue eyes.
"Yeah,"
said his friend, a rather slight boy dressed in many layers despite the heat.
"Now, if
you'll excuse us, we've got class," said Hamilton abruptly, and they both
left the room.
"Huh."
Scully sounded a little surprised.
"Yeah,
there's definitely something going on here."
That night, they
staked out the boys' dormitory.
Scully sipped
her coffee in the darkness. "Mulder, I have a feeling this is going to be
a long night."
"And I have
a feeling we're going to see something soon, Scully...and...I'm right!"
Mulder said, observing a boy sneaking out of the dorms through his binoculars.
"C'mon."
They both got
out of the car and silently followed the boy. He made his way to a pier on the
lake with a singular determination. When he got there, another boy was already
there. They embraced and started kissing.
"Oh, look
at that, Scully."
Scully grabbed
the binoculars. "Great, we're seeing two kids making out. I can't believe
I'm missing 'ER' for this."
"But look,
Scully. It's the Dean's son, Hamilton? And his friend, Jake."
"So what,
there are gay people everywhere, Mulder," Scully said, scornfully.
"Maybe
that's what those two were afraid of us finding out. He *is* the Dean's
son."
"Huh, it's
funny. I was sure the two at the restaurant were the gay ones."
"Well,
shall we go, Mulder?"
"No, I want
to see what happens."
"Fine,"
Scully said, bored.
After about a
half an hour of whispering and necking the two boys parted and went home.
Scully and Mulder returned to the motel.
"See you
bright and early, Scully," Mulder said, unlocking the door to his room.
"I want to follow the Dean's son and his friend, see if anything else is
suspicious about them."
"You're not
serious, Mulder. They're just kids. I mean, perhaps they are having an illicit
love affair, but they're still just kids."
"There's
more to them than meets the eye. And there's got to be something going on at
that school. For one thing, all the 'teenagers' look like they're in their
twenties. I don't know many buff 16-year-old boys who have to shave every day.
All except for that Pratt kid, which makes me even more suspicious of
him."
The next
morning, the agents were at Rawley Academy by 7 a.m. They watched Hamilton and
Jake go to crew practice, then attend a class taught by Finn. After lunch, the
boys disappeared into the dorm. After a couple of hours, they came out and
retrieved a motorcycle from behind some bushes. Then they drove off.
"I think
this might be it, Scully," said Mulder as he pulled the car onto the road
to follow the couple.
They followed
the couple to a rest stop several miles away from the school. There were plenty
of other people milling about, so they didn't have to worry about being
conspicuous as they watched the boys. They observed the smaller boy walking
into the ladies' room.
"Now that's
interesting," said Mulder.
A few minutes
later, what appeared to be a young woman in a very short, tight dress came out
of the restroom. She looked a lot like the Pratt boy.
"Scully, I
think we just found our gender-bender."
"Mulder,
perhaps the boy is a cross-dresser. Just because someone is in woman's clothing
does not make him female. Maybe these two enjoy kinky sex games."
"Ooooh,"
Mulder smirked, raising his eyebrows at Scully. Sobering, he continued,
"But look at her! That's a woman, I tell you."
"Okay, so
maybe *she* likes to wear men's clothing."
"Right,"
Mulder said incredulously. "Why would anyone do that?"
"These two
look like they're really in love. Maybe she wants to be close to him by going
to the school with him. It *is* an all-boys school."
They watched as
the kids climbed onto the motorcycle again. "They're taking off."
They continued
to follow the couple until they arrived at a chic restaurant. As the pair
walked towards the door, holding hands and laughing, Scully and Mulder caught
up with them.
"Excuse
me," called Mulder. The couple turned around to face the agents.
"It's Hamilton and Jake, right?"
Hamilton put a
protective arm around 'Jake.' "Please, please, please, don't tell our
parents," he pleaded.
"Tell your
parents what?" probed Scully.
"Don't tell
my parents Jake's really a girl," replied Hamilton.
"And don't
tell my mom I'm pretending to be a boy and attending a school for boys,"
said Jake.
Scully turned to
Mulder. "So, Mulder, have we seen enough?" she asked, with a
triumphant smile.
"So, when I
asked about a person who can change his sex, you two thought I was talking
about-" Mulder looked at Jake.
They both
nodded.
"And
Misters Krudski and Calhoun..."
"They know
too."
"C'mon,
Mulder, let's go. Don't worry, kids, your secret is safe with us."
"Thanks,"
they said, their relief obvious on their faces.
Mulder and
Scully headed back to the motel. Unfortunately, the next available flight back
to Washington wasn't till the next day so they opted to spend another night.
Scully was about to get ready for bed when there was a knock at her door. She
opened it to find Mulder standing there.
"Scully,
this day has been a total waste. Care to help me try to salvage it by going to
the local watering hole with me?"
Scully yawned.
"Not really, Mulder."
"Okay.
Goodnight, Scully."
Mulder walked to
the little shack with the glowing beer sign in the window. As he opened the
door, the acrid smell of cigarette smoke assaulted his nose, though there were
only a few patrons there. He heard the cracking of pool balls in the back as he
slid onto a bar stool and ordered a beer. It wasn't long before a rather
plain-looking woman sat down next to him. He tried to politely ignore her as
she attempted small talk with him, but without warning, she touched his hand,
and suddenly Mulder's conscious mind shut down and his body was on fire with
desire.
Scully sighed
and turned off the TV. There wasn't anything on worth watching--maybe she would
join Mulder after all. Grabbing her jacket, she left the room and walked across
the street towards the bar. As she approached the parking lot, Scully saw a
dazed-looking Mulder being led from the bar by a brunette. His eyes were
glassy, like he was drugged, and the woman was leading him by the arm to a
cheap imported car. Scully drew her gun. "Hold it right there!" she
yelled.
The woman turned
to look at her, and suddenly, she was...a man. Not just any man, but Finn, the
English teacher! Finn sprinted into the darkness. Scully shouted a warning but
he was gone.
She ran to
Mulder, who was rubbing his temple. "Mulder, are you all right?"
"Uh, yeah.
What happened?"
Dana Scully
sighed, cringing at the thought of trying to explain to Dean Fleming that one
of his teachers had actually been a sex-changing alien.
"Come on,
I'll explain on the way to Rawley Academy," she said, leading Mulder to
their car in the motel parking lot.
