Chapter 5

Joey and Pacey arrived at Joey's and both noticed the Potter car parked in the driveway. That could only mean one thing...Bessie and Bodie were home. With meant another thing...Joey would have some explaining to do about why Pacey
would be living there for a while. Joey knew neither Bessie nor Bodie would mind at all. They loved Pacey. However she didn't know how much Pacey would want her to tell them; and she'd have to give some explanation.

Joey-Pace, before we go in there we should talk about what we'll tell Bessie and Bodie. I mean trust me, they wont care at all about you staying with us but I will need to give them some explanation.

Pacey-Yeah, your right. Uumm....well Id rather not let them know about my dad. I really don't want this getting out...

Joey-Ok we wont tell them that but we could tell them that you were having some problems at home? We wouldn't have to go into specifics.

Pacey- Yeah, that'll work.

Joey-Ok listen when we go inside go to my room and give me a chance to talk to Bess. Then you and me can talk. Ok?

Pacey- Yeah, sure. Listen Jo, I really appreciate all you've done for me but if this is putting you and your sister out at all then-

Joey-Pace?

Pacey- Yeah?

Joey- Shut up, you dork! (Joey says with a smile getting a laugh outta Pacey) Of 'course your not putting us out. We both care about you and we'll love having you around. Even if you are annoying.

Pacey-Thanks Jo.

Joey- Anytime.

And with that they enter Joey's house being greeted with the smell of dinner cooking.

Bessie- Hey Joey, where ya been?

Joey- I was out with Pacey. Did you guys have fun today?

Bessie-Oh hey Pace.

Pacey-Hey Bessie. Smells great, great!

Bessie- Thanks. Yeah we had a great time. We took Alex to Bodie's sister’s house for the day and then the we all went shopping. We had a blast. How was your day?

Joey and Pacey exchange glances.

Joey- Good.

Bessie- Pacey, you stayin’ for dinner?

Pacey- Yeah, if that's ok.

Bessie- You kiddin? Of course that's ok. You’re always welcome here!

Pacey- Thanks, Bessie.

Joey- Hey Pacey I’ll meet you in my room in a sec ok? I just gotta talk to Bess for a sec.

Pacey- Ok.

Pacey leaves the room and Joey turns to Bessie.

Bessie- What's up?

Joey-Look...Pacey's been having some trouble at home and I wanted to know if he could stay here for a while.

Bessie-Oh… well that would explain the duffel bag. What kind of trouble?

Joey-Nothing major...but enough to make home life difficult. So it’s ok with you right?

Bessie- Yeah sure but I’m sure Pacey'll have to check with his parents first.

Joey- Oh, he already did. They ok'd it.

Bessie- All right well Pacey can take the room next to yours. If we get booked he'll have to take up to the couch though.

Joey- Thank you so much Bess!! This means a lot to both of us.

Bessie- No problem… And Jo?

Joey- Yeah?

Bessie- I know there’s more to this home situation then your telling me. And that's ok...just make sure he's ok.

Joey- Will do. Thanks again.

Joey leaves the kitchen and heads into her room. She opens her bedroom door to find Pacey staring at a picture of Joey, Pacey, and Dawson. It was taken when they were 13 and Joey is in the middle of both boys with her arms around them.

Joey- Hey.

Pacey- Hey. So what did she say?

Joey- She is completely ok with it. She says you can have the room next to mine. Unless of course we run out of rooms for the guests; then you'll be summoned to the couch.

Pacey- Oh God, that's great.

Joey- Told ya she loves ya.

Pacey laughs at that one but inside feels so happy that the Potters cared about him so much. He could get used to this......

Joey- Maybe we should talk.

Pacey- Yeah I guess....

Joey- God, where do we start?

Pacey- Ok I know where I wanna start.

Joey- K, go ahead.

Pacey- I wanna thank-you for all you've done for me. Although I'm not to happy you came into my house when I was about to get mauled I do appreciate it. I’m just glad you didn't get hurt. If I get to be to much of a hassle just please tell me. I don't wanna impose at all.

Joey- Pace, I’m happy I can help. And I know I maybe shouldn't have gone in. But when I saw what was about to happen I couldn't just turn and look the other way. I promised to protect him from you...and that's one promise I intend to keep. And you wont become a pain or impose. You never could. I just want you to feel safe.

Pacey- Ya think we can continue this talk tomorrow? I think we're both a little emotionally exhausted.

Joey- Well I never though Id say this but..... I think your right.

Pacey- Did Miss Joey I’m as stubborn as I am sarcastic Potter just say she agreed with the one and only Pacey Witter?

Joey- Yeah.... but don't expect it to happen again.

Pacey- I wouldn't dare.

Just then there was a knock on the door.

Joey- Come in.

Bessie- Dinners ready you to.

Joey- Ok.

Pacey- Hey Bess, could I talk to you for a second?

Bessie- Sure kid.

Joey-I'll meet you at the table.

Joey left and Bessie and Pacey took a seat on Joey’s bed.

Pacey- Bessie, I just wanna let you know that I greatly appreciate you letting me stay here. I can’t even put into words how much that means to me. If I become to much please tell me.

Bessie- Pacey don't worry about it. I’ve known you your whole life...I love you like a brother. I'm gonna like having you around. Now lets go eat.

Pacey- Ok.

They hug and go eat. After dinner Joey and Pacey hung out in Joey's room and listened to music and goofed around. At about 12:00 they decided they were both exhausted and it was time to turn in. They said their good nights and went to their respective rooms. At about 1:00 Joey was still wide awake and had the feeling she should check on Pacey. So she did. She quietly opened his bedroom door and found him thrashing around in his bed whimpering softly to himself in his sleep. Joey knew he was having a nightmare. She rushed over to him and shook him gently.

Joey- Pacey, wake up its just a bad dream. Pace... c'mon.

Pacey- (in his sleep) No!! Leave me alone!!! Please, dad... please just...go away. God please help me.

Joey- Pace wake up!!!

Finally Pacey woke up.

Joey- It was just a bad dream Pace.

Pacey- God, will I ever get away from him?! What time is it?

Joey- 1:10.

Pacey- Go back to sleep Potter. I’ll be fine. It’s late and you must be tired.

Joey- Pacey I’m not leaving you. Actually I was wondering.....

Pacey- What?

                                    And I don't want the world to see me

Joey- Can I sleep with you tonight? I mean not sleep with you but stay in here tonight. I wanna be close to you and make sure you're ok. If that's ok with you that is.

Pacey- Potter, that's more then ok with me. If you really want to.

Joey- I do.

Pacey and Joey both got under the covers. Joey immediately wrapped her arms around Pacey. They ended up falling asleep tangled in each other and both thought the same thing.... I haven't felt this safe in a long time.
