The Snow Queen was in her icy palace. Kay was there too. He was very unhappy.

'Young man,' she said. 'I have to go south today to take the cold winter winds there before spring and summer come. But you must stay here. You're mine for ever.'

The Snow Queen called her white horses and set off in her sleigh.

Not long after, Gerda arrived. She saw her brother.

'Who are you?' he asked. 'I don't know you. Go away.' Gerda remembered theire - Grandma's rose.

'Do you remember grandmother? Here is one of her roses.' And Gerda burst in to tear.

Her tears fell on Kay's face, and they washed the tiny piece of mirror from Kay's eye.

'Come quickly,' Kay said. 'We must go before the Snow Queen comes back.' They found the reindeer and rode back home.

After many weeks they arrived home in Denmark.

Their family was so pleasure to see them.

'Oh, my darling children,' their grandma said.

She hugged them. Then she gave them a hot drink and some of her delicious cakes.

And this time, the children told her a story - their adventures in the land of the Snow Queen.
