Gerda was back at home. The days passed. Gerda and her family didn't know what to do.
'Where, O where is Kay?' she asked her mother. 'I'm sure he isn't dead,' her mother said.
But the days and weeks passed. The family became more and more unhappy.
At last spring came.
'I must go and find my brother,' Gerda thought. ' I'll take one of grandma's roses to Kay.'
Then she sailed away in one of her father's boats.
After many days she came to a forest. At the side of the forest there was a house.
She saw an old lady.
'Welcome, my dear,' the lady said 'You're tired. You must stay here with me.'
The old lady looked after Gerda. She was like a mother.
Gerda was tired after her long journey. She stayed a few days with the old lady.
She was really nice.
But Gerda had to leave. However, when she looked after her boat, she couldn't find it!
'Oh, the old lady has hidden it!' she thought. 'She doesn't want me to go.
