I'm glad all I had to teach my daughters about were the birds and the bees. I didn't have to worry about sex changes. Good luck, little girl! Posted by: Bessie | Jul 3, 2008 4:54:13 PM I understand that there are definite gender issues with certain individuals, but this is having your cake and eating it too. Either you are a woman or you are a man. Women give birth. Men do not. This is a woman, not a man. Posted by: | Jul 3, 2008 4:57:13 PM Cheap journalism... Julie Deardorff responds: Beth, I posted four different items today. Guess which one, by far, is drawing the most interest? Posted by: Beth | Jul 3, 2008 4:57:17 PM Personally i think that this is sick and people should not change what or who "GOD" has made them. And i feel sorry for the baby its mama & daddy are the same person. Posted by: shirley | Jul 3, 2008 5:00:53 PM I do not understand why this person has chosen to become so public about this. Is there a lot of money involved? What he/she does in private is his/her own business but flaunting it serves no purpose. I am definitely one person who does not care to see this on TV or have my grandchildren see this and get the idea this is "neat" - it is not neat. Posted by: Rebecca Bricker | Jul 3, 2008 5:17:39 PM This is a story of too much freedom given to an idiot... If this was in another country he could never do this. Now the girl is going to have a mom for a dad? WTF yes Posted by: Male | Jul 3, 2008 5:30:27 PM This is so stupid. It's a woman that chose to look like a man that had a baby. The link of the article is "Pregnant Man Gives Birth". Ridiculous sensationalism. Posted by: Sick Reader | Jul 3, 2008 5:39:55 PM It is NOT "a man gives birth". It's a WOMAN that gave birth. I don't care what people do with their bodies, but this is stupid. Posted by: Rhonin | Jul 3, 2008 6:09:51 PM I wonder how healthy the baby will be in the future with all those hormones he/she was taking. I feel sorry for the baby when she grows up. I hope she doesn't have "problems" herself. All those mixed hormones might be causing problems for her in the future. Posted by: Sazanne | Jul 3, 2008 6:23:31 PM How amazing it would be if it were actually a man. But since this was NOT a man, I am not impressed. Penis=man. Vagina=woman. Perhaps someone should send the writer of this story back to grade school for some remedial sex-ed. Posted by: D Palmer | Jul 3, 2008 6:31:45 PM Good for him. Stories like this just serve to point out how ingrained our ideas of what male/female should be. What it means to be male or female is socially constructed, not biologically determined. Sure, some women can give birth, but some cannot. If that is your definition of a woman (being a mother/giving birth) does that make women who cannot or choose not to give birth less than women? As for what happens to the kid - I think enough intelligent people realize that there are plenty of terrible parents in the world, a large percentage of them being what most people would consider "normal." As long as the child is loved, the kid will be fine. There's plenty of down-home, white-bred, god-fearing, happily married, heterosexuals who treat their kids like trash. One transsexual having a baby has a better chance of treating his kid well than most "normal" people I know. I do, however, feel sorry for the differences in discharge if pregnant kid for all the torment closed-minded a$$holes will visit upon her for coming from a "weird" family. Posted by: Laura | Jul 3, 2008 6:47:14 PM I think the most important issue this baby girl will have with her parents is whether or not they provide love. Men and women are equally adept at this. What this man has decided to do is up to him. If you think it's weird then don't get a sex change. Posted by: Colleen | Jul 3, 2008 7:03:06 PM It's amazing how many commenters just cannot leave someone to enjoy their freedom and (in light of this weekend's holiday) independence. People need to get over the need to label everything and pass their own personal judgments. Why can't they just accept what happens as reality, whether or not it suits their personal preferences or prejudices? Oh, I forgot, we must protect the children. But from what? Posted by: Johnsy | Jul 3, 2008 7:20:37 PM If this little girl is brought up in a loving environment by two loving parents than she will have a better life than some children whose parents have split or who are in Foster Care because their parents are neglectful or worse - physically or sexually abusing them. Good luck to them both ... may their family be full of love and happiness. Posted by: Tracey | Jul 3, 2008 7:25:52 PM If this "woman" really wanted to be a "man" why did she keep her female organs? She's just a woman in mens clothes. If the parents don't know what they are, I really feel sorry for that little girl (or is she really a little boy?) Posted by: me | Jul 3, 2008 7:31:16 PM Why would this he/she even want to give birth! And the other question is, if she wanted to transform into a he, why did she have sex with a he in order to get a she? Does a he/she prefer sex with men or with women? And why? Posted by: Glorygal | Jul 3, 2008 7:37:05 PM A man did not give birth. It is a woman, despite the surgeries, the lifestyle and the facial hair. Get real and call this what it is - transgender giving birth. She has all the parts necessary to conceive and give birth. Posted by: Em | Jul 3, 2008 7:45:08 PM This is sick. When he was going through the sex change why wouldn't they get rid of everything. When this girl is older and finding out that what her father did was kind of gross she is going to need to see a physciatrist. Good Luck. Posted by: Sue | pregnant beta fish Jul 3, 2008 7:54:50 PM To Laura who stated "What it means pictures of women pregnant with boys to be male or female is socially constructed, not biologically determined."...are you can you get pregnant if joking? You cannot be that naive. Being a male or female has EVERYTHING to do with biology. Good god, please go back to school and learn about the basics of human life and spare proving to us that you have a complete lack of comprehending the basic laws of life... A rose is still a rose by any other name. Posted by: | Jul 3, 2008 8:38:59 PM Bottom line, none of us should care or judge this new parent. As long as he loves and cares for this child, it's not for us to say boop. I'm a woman and comfortable with my sex by birth. Those of us who are also comfortable with our sex by birth cannot possibly understand how this person and others like him feel. If I'm to make any judgment here, it is to assume that someone who felt so strongly to go through such a horrible ordeal and spend so much money to become another sex, can only be a person of high ideals, extraodinary courage and commitment. Hmm, sounds like an ideal parent to me. Posted by: Mary | Jul 3, 2008 8:41:55 PM Winston Churchill told Britain that Germany had to be defeated in World War 2 to stop the spread of perverted science. Germany lost the war, but perverted science has spread through the world like the plague that it is. Posted by: Tom | Jul 3, 2008 8:55:20 PM I've recently become aware of how much more prevalent ambiguous sexuality is in the general population than I had ever realized. Genitalia are not always clearly male or female, and inner identity often conflicts with the given body. Who are we to decide that this is not how God "made" them? To be judgmental about somebody else's most intimate self identity seems to me the height of arrogance. Posted by: Vicky | Jul 3, 2008 9:49:45 PM We all have male/female reproductive imprints...gender is not as far apart as we think. Poster 'Shirley' said that people shouldn't change what "God" made them...would she include homosexuals in that statement? Bet not. So many make 'God' in their own image and opinions. Posted by: Tough Love | Jul 3, 2008 9:59:40 PM he is still a she down there, why is this a story? Posted by: Karen | Jul 3, 2008 10:07:45 PM It is what it is. But a "man" is not giving birth. At the most basic level, a man is a male, a being that produces gametes (spermatozoa) that perform the fertilizing function in generation. (wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn) I would be impressed if this person could impregnate someone AND bear a child, that would be a man-pregnancy, but as it is, this is not anything extraordinary. Posted by: JK | Jul 3, 2008 10:31:47 PM Only in the USA! Stupidity. A WOMAN GIVES BIRTH. She kept the female organs; therefore she's a man.. Why the big headline? Posted by: carol | Jul 3, 2008 10:35:33 PM Saw this couple on Oprah. Interesting. I too, hope all the chemicals Thomas has put into his body doesnt affect this child physicallt, U an sure if you keep an eye out on Oprah, she will do an "update". She too likes to sensationalize too. Posted by: CLuczak | Jul 3, 2008 11:31:38 PM People are scared of things they don't understand. In the modern day of freedom on this country we should embrace something new and different for one day it will be the norm. When disease and pollution has destroyed all things as you might define as 'NORMAL'. I feel a is order congrats. For the happiness of them as people they do decide to have more children! Posted by: Deann | Jul 4, 2008 10:36:47 AM The definition of what a man or woman (gender) is socially created and depends on ones own opinion while the definition of male or female (sex) depends on science, AKA what organs are there. So if this person feels like a man and wants to make himself more manly looking through the tools we have today, why shouldn't he be able to? Why is it stupid that he wants to feel comfortable in his own skin and be who he believes he is? Posted by: Allie | Jul 4, 2008 11:25:23 AM ..... Stupid Americans .... Posted by: John Doe | Jul 4, 2008 11:52:48 AM This isn't a man. There is nothing news-worthy about a woman getting pregnant and giving birth. This person is choosing to appear as a man, and that is her business, but people wanting to make a news out of the fact that she gave birth is rediculous. Posted by: | Jul 4, 2008 2:52:10 PM I also think that this is stupid!! Men dont have children, God didnt create them for this purpose, This isnt a man!! This is a woman who turned herself into a man (why??) Why go and change what GOD made you into?? Posted by: Nadia | Jul 4, 2008 10:07:19 PM I really don't know why the hell Americans are crazy to do anything dawn thing they feel they can with thier God given body. They said He was a She, "He Kept his female reproductive organs" "He gave birth to a baby girl" What effect do you feel this will have on the poor little girl. I really pray God do not make her go the direction of her parents and God do not look her parent's sin upon her. Posted by: Yman | Jul 5, 2008 6:22:15 AM Ignorant people commenting on this: Whether or not he has reproductive organs or not, this is about gender identity. GENDER IDENTITY. Definition: Perception of one’s self as male or female. Why is it so hard to believe that maybe God isn't perfect? What about those who are born as intersexual and their parents choose the wrong sex? Educate yourself on issues you do not understand before you decide to just insult someone and someone's family. Congrats to Thomas and Nancy! You have hundreds of thousands of people supporting you and wishing you well... God bless you. Posted by: Liz | Jul 7, 2008 3:04:49 PM Wow Yman... Its amazing that just because you don't understand or agree with whats going on here doesn't mean this loving family is going to have a negative effect on their daughter. This is a loving family. And I thought Christians didn't take judgement upon others...EDUCATION...according to your grammer, you could use some. Stop spreading hatred. Not everyone believes what you believe. And just because you believe it to be true, DOES NOT mean it is. Wake up. Posted by: Liz | Jul 7, 2008 3:09:05 PM "Whether or not he has reproductive organs or not, this is about gender identity. GENDER IDENTITY. Definition: Perception of one’s self as male or female." Okay, fine. I understand that some people born as women feel that they are really men (and vice versa). I don't have a problem with sex changes. But if you're going to talk about gender identity, then what is Thomas's "gender identity"? I guess you would argue that "he" sees "himself" as male. But "he" just got pregnant and gave birth, which is NOT part of male gender identity. From my understanding of the story, Nancy was unable to get pregnant, so Thomas sort of "interrupted" "his" sex change process in order to get prenatal vitamins while not pregnant pregnant. That simply means that "he" chose to remain female. In other words, she is a she. If I were unable to get pregnant, my husband would be unable to do so in my place because he really is a he. If Thomas really is a "he" in terms of both biology and gender identity, then getting pregnant was not an option. If "he" is really male, then they would have had the same options as other infertile couples - adoption or surrogacy. I agree with those with those saying this really isn't all that newsworthy (although it is interesting). Regardless of appearance, Thomas is female and, as such, giving birth isn't exactly a unique event. Posted by: Dienne | Jul 8, 2008 11:02:27 AM Whoever made this comment is the idiot: "This is a story of too much freedom given to an idiot... If this was in another country he could never do this." First, you are lucky to live in this country and any country that wouldn't allow this, I rather not live b/c of their crazy laws, especially towards women. Plus you want more laws to prevent the way we live? This man/woman having a baby affects you how? It's amazing how people get worked up over silly issues like this instead of real-world problems. Posted by: CW | Jul 15, 2008 4:46:52 PM I hope the child is brought up in a home full of love and support. When I was growing up I knew a couple of kids in my neighborhood that came from affluent homes, had "normal?" parents, but had TERRIBLE childhoods (physically beaten by them, and mentally abused). As long as this child is loved and is taught how to treat others with respect, WHO CARES what the parents are, what they do and what they look like.... In the end all of that doesn't matter.... Posted by: dee | Jul 16, 2008 8:38:01 AM This guy slash gal is already subjecting this child a crual life, He, she, should be castrated! If I were endangering my child, they would throw the book at me, why not this terable mence to sociaty??? Posted by: recon | Jul 16, 2008 12:44:23 PM Do people actually check their grammar and spelling before posting? I don't care how "great" you think your comments are, if your grammar is off and the spelling is wrong, it just comes off as stupid. You know who you are. By the way I agree with one of the posters that said- "This man/woman giving birth affects you how?" Let them be. I bet this couple will be better parents than a lot of other couples that are deemed "normal" by our society. Good luck to them.
