A few years ago I friend of mine gave me a used hot tub shell. I had intended on building a deck and frameing it in to set it up. As years went by and due to time and money it just never happend. One sunday afternoon this past june I had asked my son Willis if he would come by one evening during the week and help me cut the tub up and box it so I could send it out to the trash. I just wanted it out of the backyard knowing that it was a project that was costly and doomed to never be done. He said he would. Willis took a walk over to where the tub was sitting up side down behind the garage, studdied it and said "why dont you just dig a hole and turn it into a pond? It would be a hell of a lot easier then cutting it up"  Our pond was concieved. Without a thought, I agreed. My Wife and I always wanted to have a watergarden. The next day work begun.

Once we got the tub in the ground and leveled we filled it with water. Keeping our fingers crossed that she held. The next morning she was still holding strong. Unfortunatly that dident last long, by the next day we were loseing water. One of the drain lines that had been plugged at the bottom of the tub had cracked and blew out. We had origanaly pluged all the drain & jet holes with spray foam and silicon sealant. It was water tight, but not strong enough to withstand the water pressure. The tub was drained, cleaned, and the drains and ports were sealed off with fiberglass resin. That did the trick. Or so we thought. Once the tub was full again, after a couple of days we began to lose water again. After draining the tub and a thorough inspection, he found that the weight of the water had settled the tub into the ground and cracked the tub. The way the tub had cracked it couldent be repaird. We bought a liner and lined it. She has never leaked since.

We needed shale and lots of it. Being that were were doing this on a low budget, we collected shale out of the side of a cliff and a local park.
