Actually, considering I have advanced degrees in Linguistics, I am well aware of Philology and Historical Linguistics. However, at any given point in history, within a particular region, there is a language that is considered the "standard" version of that language, and though there may be variation, that variation has limits before it becomes another dialect. For example, "I'm going to the store," and "I am going toward the store," are variants of a standard lnguage. But "I'm going to the store," and "I's be's go to duh sto, nigga," are two different dialects.
