Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter
cover Product Description
Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter is the first expansion pack for the role-playing game Icewind Dale. Like all expansion packs, it requires you to own the original title in order to play. Heart of Winter shares the same time frame with Icewind Dale--the year 1281, the Year of the Cold Soul--and its five new major areas are located just north of the original game's locale. Players can take their ninth level or above Icewind Dale characters to Heart of Winter via a small house in the great tree town of Kuldahar. Alternately, players who have beaten Icewind Dale can import living or deceased characters to Heart of Winter, as long as at least one character survived with the same ninth level or above restriction. Or players can simply generate a new party. Both Heart of Winter and Icewind Dale use AD&D Second Edition rules; however some of the special powers and abilities in the third edition are available in the expansion. For example, thieves have access to sneak attack and crippling strike abilities, and the new spell progression tables for rangers and paladins have been taken from the third edition rules. In addition to new areas, powers, and abilities, Heart of Winter features: new portraits, new character sound sets, new monsters, 50 new spells, 800 x 600 resolution, drop-away interface, gem bags, potion bags, scroll cases, hot keys that highlight normal doors and ground items, and the ability to buy multiple items from stores. The biggest change is the ability for all character classes to reach 30th level, and druids can advance higher still.

Fallout 1 / Fallout 2 Bundle (Jewel Case)
cover Product Description
The science-fiction role-playing games Fallout and Fallout 2 have been bundled together for the complete post-nuclear-war game experience. In Fallout you are dwelling in a self-sufficient fallout shelter called Vault-13, three generations removed from the apocalyptic war. When your shelter's water filter breaks down, you are sent out into the unknown wasteland to find a replacement filter or a new source of fresh water. The Fallout adventure unfolds as a gritty tale of discovery, paranoia, and survival. Mature gamers are in for a classic role-playing game that has earned a cult following just as loyal as the fans of the Mad Max movies that inspired it. Fallout 2 takes place 80 years after the events in the original game. You are the Chosen One, a tribal ancestor of Fallout's vault dweller. Your tribe has built a modest settlement in an isolated corner of the futuristic Californian wasteland, but you must find a Garden of Eden Creation Kit to sustain the village. During your adventure, you'll encounter misfits and monsters ranging from gangsters to supermutants. Twice as many weapons are at your disposal, including the M72 Gauss Rifle, M3A1 "Grease Gun" SMG, Louisville Slugger, H&K CAWS, and the Solar Scorcher. In addition, you can give your character combat postures such as berserk, aggressive, defensive, or cowardly.
Parents should be aware that the games contain violence and some sexual situations. Though you can adjust the tone down a bit through the main control panel, developments that occur on the adult setting are integral to the story.

Diablo 2
cover Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Diablo 2 is finally available and, yes, it is well worth the wait. Everything that made the original Diablo great--nonstop action, wicked monsters, dark Gothic atmosphere, and fantastic magic items--has returned. But new enhancements such as the class skill system and cheater-proof multiplayer competition make Diablo 2 even better than the original.
The millions of gamers who fought their way through the horror of Tristram's catacombs in the original Diablo realized that all was not well after their hero destroyed the demon's physical body. Diablo 2 opens with a vivid animated vision of that mad, doomed hero, who unwittingly spreads chaos as he moves toward a fate of Diablo's choosing. With the original character classes gone, players choose from a new cadre of champions: the Barbarian (can wield two two-handed swords at once, one in each hand), the Necromancer (raises the dead to fight his battles), the Amazon (master of bow and spear), Paladin (holy crusader), and Sorceress (wielder of elemental magic). These warriors follow a diabolical plot through four acts, and each act is roughly as big as the original Diablo.
Diablo 2 looks and behaves very much like Diablo. Players are assigned quests by nonplayer characters and adventure through dark catacombs and crypts. Hordes of vile monsters assail the hero, who survives by force of arms, powerful spells, and through the use of varied and exotic magic items. Randomly generated dungeons guarantee fresh adventure each time a new game is started. But unlike the original game, characters must fight their way through the above-ground wilderness before entering a dungeon. Fortunately, some of the frustrations of adventuring have been lessened in Diablo 2 , thanks to the new ability to run and the clever implementation of "waypoints" that let your character quickly travel to and from the safety of town.
Along with the new character classes comes a new character skill system. As in the original game, players improve their character's ability scores as they kill monsters and gain experience. But unlike the original game, players get to add specific skills, spells, and powers each time they advance. For example, after gaining a level you could choose between taking a skill that improves your attack speed or a skill that allows you to scatter your foes with a mighty shout. With this customized advancement system it is unlikely that two high-level characters, even characters of the same class, will be alike. Instead of progressing along a set path, you can choose skills and powers that complement your own particular playing style. Interestingly, this new customizable class system closely parallels the changes made in the new edition of Dungeons & Dragons.
Other enhancements include a method for creating and customizing magic items, 3-D accelerated spell effects, anticheat multiplayer code, and a place to safely store excess money and equipment. But even without these tweaks, even without the sophisticated story line and all the cool new features, Diablo 2 is just a great game. The sound, music, and graphics combine to create a tantalizingly eerie setting. Players will willingly let their game-playing hours slip well past reasonable bedtimes, suffering bleary-eyed classes and meetings in exchange for "just one more" magic item, dungeon level, or character skill.
Diablo is back. Say hello to the game that will once again dominate gamers' computers, and say good-bye to your free time. --Michael Fehlauer.

Final Fantasy 8
cover Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com

SquareSoft has always had a surefire hit when releasing any of their Final Fantasy titles, and Final Fantasy VIII should be no exception. The basis of a good RPG (role-playing game) has always been the story; spectacular graphics are secondary. Final Fantasy VIII's involved and interesting storyline is filled with great twists, well-developed characters, suspense, and romance. As an added bonus, the graphics are beautiful. Everything--from the low-lit jazz club to the steam-filled railroad tunnels--is gorgeous and perfectly sets the mood and tone of a scene. The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience.
The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president.
You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. --John Cocking

Baldur's Gate
cover Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Baldur's Gate is a near-perfect adaptation of the classic tabletop, role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. Six separate races and eight core character classes, from which the player can create a completely original character, are available. The game world is well painted, and players are free to explore this wonderfully textured game environment in any way they see fit, all against the backdrop of a thoughtfully conceived and versatile plot.
You begin the game as a young orphan living with your stepfather within the safe confines of a scholarly community. It is a happy and idyllic life until your stepfather is killed and it becomes clear that you are intended to be next. You, as the young protagonist, then set out to discover just what kind of a mess you're in. During the adventure, you recruit a number of personable allies, battle foes, delve into dungeons, trek across wilderness, solve puzzles, and complete a plethora of epic quests that are seamlessly sown into the fabric of the overall plot. The story line unfolds in response to your choices to reveal your character's true identity as well as the nature and motive of your enemies.
If the Lord himself were to ask me what games he should have in his home game collection, the first two words out of my mouth would be Baldur's Gate. This 1998 Role-Playing Game of the Year is a masterpiece and the standard by which all such games will be judged for the foreseeable future. Groundbreaking 32-bit graphics, 3-D sound, multiplayer options, and a friendly real-time game engine are blended with a depth of plot in a way that redefines the genre. --Joshua B. Coombs

Diablo
cover Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Diablo is a fantasy role-playing game that captures the spirit of original face-to-face games like Dungeons and Dragons. With a straightforward story line based on fulfilling quests assigned by nonplayer characters, you equip yourself, venture into a dungeon, and slaughter legions of hideous foes. Along the way, you unearth magical treasure, discover mighty spells, and earn experience that can be used to increase your combat abilities.
Almost all of your time with Diablo is spent underground, exploring and conquering ever-deeper levels of the gloomy dungeon. Combat is fast, brutal, and constant. Whether your weapon of choice is a sword, axe, bow, or spell, all forms of combat employ a simple two-click system, which is elegant without being simplistic.
Replayability and customizability are Diablo's strong points; the incredible number of options and possibilities--and the fun that can be had experimenting with different strategies --keeps players coming back for more. All the dungeon levels are generated anew each time you draw up a new character, and are packed with an entirely different set of textures, features, items, traps, creatures, and quests. While one game may stock the fifth subterranean level with an army of skeleton warriors, the next game may pack that level with hordes of winged gargoyles. Multiplayer options exist for two to four players, so you don't have to take on the world by yourself unless you prefer solo play.
Released in 1997, this game is far simpler than newer titles that have expanded on its original concepts; there are only three character classes and a limited number of ways to truly distinguish your character from others. But sometimes there is no beating a classic. Three years old and with a sequel due in mid-2000, the original Diablo has aged remarkably well. Many of its features will seem familiar to seasoned fantasy gamers, just because so many of them have been incorporated into later RPGs.
Players who yearn for uncluttered adventuring and those with older computers will definitely want to check this one out. --Alyx Dellamonica

Asheron's Call
cover Insert speal here. Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Asheron's Call is an online multiuser dungeon where you create a character and then experience life through your alter ego's eyes, traveling via the Internet to a monster-infested universe of magic and quests.
Unlike games that spawn you into a hostile world with no clue as to what you should do there, Asheron's Call takes great pains to ensure player enjoyment at even the lowest level of play. Your first quest is simply to move through a training dungeon, acquiring the basic skills needed for survival. After that, characters sprinkled throughout the world map send you on quests, such as retrieving a lost shirt or clearing a cave of monsters. Success translates to experience, wealth, and magic items.
Asheron's Call is virtually lag-free and easy to learn, with gorgeous graphics and cool monsters. Its greatest strength, though, lies in the effort programmers have invested in creating a culture of cooperation and mentoring in their online world. With one exception, the worlds of Asheron are populated by nonplayer killers--meaning that you cannot injure another player, even by accident. What's more, it is extremely hard to survive even the low-level dungeons without help. This makes Asheron's Call the polar opposite of a game like Unreal Tournament, where players mow each other down and laugh at the carnage. Within minutes of logging on, an Asheron newbie will usually encounter an experienced adventuring partner. This outcome, a gaming universe where players are gregarious and helpful, is no accident--it is a result of good game design.
Another feature that supports the friendly atmosphere is the social system, which allows you to swear allegiance to a patron--a player who will trade magic items, advice, and cash in exchange for loyalty. There is also an experience bonus for nurturing vassals of your own. For those who are not interested in commitment, characters also may band into shorter-term fellowships.
Asheron's Call has some small flaws--some commands make your characters freeze in the midst of combat--but the good vastly outweighs the bad. In fact, finding the hours that you'll want to play (and play, and play) this game may be the biggest quest of all. --Alyx Dellamonica

Planescape: Torment
cover Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
In Planescape: Torment, you play a nameless, scarred, immortal on a quest to discover his past, his identity, and his role in the conflict over the nature of reality. The brilliant role-playing and adventure game focuses on the "Planescape" campaign setting of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game, and combines the best elements of Interplay's phenomenally successful Baldur's Gate with an enthralling story line, well-written dialogue, and beautiful artwork and graphics.
In an inspired choice, Black Isle Studios, the developer of Planescape: Torment, has chosen to provide the player, at least initially, with as little details about the story as possible. After viewing a mysterious introductory movie, players guide The Nameless One on a journey through the bleak city of Sigil and its underground catacombs. The story leads from there to the bizarre realities of alternate planes of existence, where belief and thought determine the laws of physics. Through dialogue with hundreds of nonplayer characters, puzzle solving, and point-and-click combat, The Nameless One discovers clues about his identity and the circumstances surrounding his condition.
Gamers overwhelmed by detailed role-playing games will find Planescape: Torment easier to grasp; players can freely switch between three different character classes (Fighter, Mage, Thief) for The Nameless One as the game progresses, and learning the combat and magic system--with a simple point-and-click interface--takes only a few minutes. Literally hundreds of weapons, items, spells, and "tattoos" can be collected and affixed to The Nameless One or any of the several party members acquired during the course of the game. If you're a fan of role-playing or adventure games, Planescape: Torment's engrossing world creates a must-have gaming experience. --Doug Radcliffe

Baldur's Gate Expansion Pack: Tales of The Sword Coast
cover Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast delivers what we've all been screaming for--more Baldur's Gate. Although it does not significantly extend the story line, it does provide enough new goodies to augment an already great game.
Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast provides four new areas for you to explore, all of which share the richness that made Baldur's Gate a groundbreaking masterpiece. Players are given the opportunity to explore a few new islands, visit a suburb of Baldur's Gate, and engage in a good old-fashioned dungeon crawl beneath Durlag's Tower. Players can also embark on a quest that will take them back into the city of Baldur's Gate itself. These new quests tend to be even more involved and challenging than those found in the initial game, as they gravitate more toward puzzle solving than pure combat.
The additional areas are at least as satisfying as any found in the original, featuring three new types of monsters as well as new magic items, enemies, and spells, all of which are woven seamlessly into the game play. Those who are already deeply involved in a campaign or have already completed the game need not start over to take advantage of the expansion. Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast raises the character experience cap by at least one level and can be integrated at any time during your campaign, easily providing an additional 20 hours of game play.
For a Baldur's Gate enthusiast, the four new areas alone make this expansion worth having. An added treat is the included software utility that allows players to speak to each other online via microphone, giving multiplayer games a live role-playing feel. Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast may tend to give you more of the same, but in this case, you wouldn't have it any other way. --Joshua B. Coombs

Forgotten Realms Archives: Silver Edition
cover Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The Forgotten Realms campaign setting for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons has inspired more computer games than any other. You can get 13 of them in one package with the Forgotten Realms Archives: Silver Edition. Like most collections of this size it has its share of hits and misses, but if you don't require cutting-edge graphics and modern interfaces to have fun, you'll find many hours of enjoyment in this vault of role-playing game history.
All the famous Gold Box games are included, from Pool of Radiance, the game that started it all, to the high-level adventure Pools of Darkness. It takes some doing to get them running properly, but the rewards are worth it for old-school role-playing fans that never had the chance to complete these great games. The ground-breaking Eye of the Beholder series--three terrific games--is also included. "Newer" games include the acclaimed Underdark adventure Menzoberranzan and Blood & Magic, a poor real-time strategy game that is by far the most disappointing title in this package. Even hardcore players likely won't get much satisfaction from the boring Dungeon Hack or Hillsfar, which has too much combat and too little depth.
Don't expect too much from the graphics in these games. Some are more than 10 years old, and they can be cranky on newer, faster machines running Windows 95 or 98. If you have the patience to get them running, however, this collection is one rewarding time machine. --T. Byrl Baker
