Other Information on the Pennies
- A smashed penny is made by a penny being forced between 2 steel rollers. An engraving is on one or both of the rollers, and as the penny passes through, it is smashed into an oval shape, and an engaved design is impressed on to the coin at the same time.
Smashing pennies usually cost 51 cents.(Including the penny)
The first known smashed pennies were made at the WORLDS COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION in 1893, in Chicago.
Pennies made after 1982, are only copper plated. They have a zinc core, and when they are smashed, sometimes the zinc will show through, leaving silvery marks on your smashed penny.
