Mascalls & Beauchamps - Zambia 2005 Proposed Team Challenge Expedition Itinerary Outlined below is an itinerary showing a proposed day-by-day plan to enable the team to achieve its objectives. The itinerary is not a rigid plan, but a template or guideline showing how the expedition is expected to work in Zambia. As,with any expedition, local circumstances and conditions may result in adjustments or compromises having to be made- it will be up to the team to put the plan into action! 13-Jul-05 Wed Build up day. World Challenge Expeditions (WCE) will hand over team equipment, flight tickets and all itinerary and budget information to the team and leaders. The team will stay at the school or departure depot overnight and travel to the airport the following day. 14-Jul-05 Thu Build up Depart LHR The team will travel to London Heathrow Airport. You will need to arrive at the airport with at least three hours spare to allow your whole team to check-in all luggage and equipment and collect incountry budget. You will fly with South Africa Airways, overnight from London Heathrow to Johannesburg on flight SA237 at 2130hrs. [Please note that all flight details are subject to alteration at the carriers discretion]. 15-Jul-05 Fri Transit Livingstone Your flight will arrive into Johannesburg at 0930hrs local time, then you will need to change aircraft to fly to Livingstone on flight CE202 at 1120hrs arriving at 1255hrs local time. [Please note that all flight details are subject to alteration at the carriers discretion]. You will need to make your way to your accommodation for the night which will be pre-booked for you by WCE. On your first day in country you will need to change money and confirm any necessary bookings. It will also be important for you to purchase food supplies for your expedition 16-Jul-05 Sat Livingstone Today you will be able to take a trip to visit the amazing Victoria Falls, you will also need to spend some time researching transport options to Lusaka as well as provisioning for any food and equipment you may need for the start of your expedition. 17-Jul-05 Sun Livingstone to Lusaka Today you will travel to Lusaka where you will need to find accommodation for the night and contact your project host. If you arrive early enough you may also find today a good opportunity to purchase any project materials you require, otherwise this will need to be done tomorrow. You will also need to contact your project hosts to confirm arrival details and directions. 18-Jul-05 Mon Lusaka Project Today you will travel to your project site. Details of the location of your project are yet to be confirmed, but WCE are looking into the possibility of you visiting a school on the outskirts of Lusaka. 19-Jul-05 Tue Project Many schools in Zambia are very poor and have little or no sporting and recreational facilities available. The project is aimed at improving the recreational and educational life of the students and the team may find themselves being involved in a variety of tasks and it is essential to the success of the project for the team to consider the "bigger picture" by upgrading and installing better facilities wherever necessary. 20-Jul-05 Wed Project You can expect to complete a variety of tasks and may be asked to concrete a netball field, develop a football pitch with goals, build some recreational facilities, upgrade the fencing around the school, paint murals inside the classrooms and make some general renovations around the school. 21-Jul-05 Thu Project The team will be camping at the school which will give you a great insight into school life in Botswana. The team should be aware that the students may be taking end of term exams while you are staying at the school and it may not be possible for you to go into classes, though if you are keen to get involved with the teaching, you should speak with the Principal as it may be possible to arrange. 22-Jul-05 Fri Project In addition to teaching there are many other opportunities for you to get involved with while at the school. Living in the community you will have a great deal of contact with the locals, so arranging social evenings should be easy. Make sure that your team knows 2 or 3 songs that you can all sing. African communities have many songs that they use to entertain one another and visitors. It would be polite if you were able to return this compliment and would be beneficial for you to develop this phase into a cultural experience as well as a working project. 23-Jul-05 Sat Project Continue project work. 24-Jul-05 Sun Project You will need to spend today finalising all details of the project and ensuring that all of the project work you undertook is complete. If possible you will also need to contact your hosts for the acclimatisation phase at Bridge Camp. 25-Jul-05 Mon Project to Bridge Camp Saying farewell to your project hosts you will travel to your acclimatisation are at Bridge Camp, located just 3km south of the main road - the turning is located at Bridge Market, a hubbub of activity just before Luangwa Bridge. Any last minute provisions can be made here. 26-Jul-05 Tue Bridge Camp Acclim Once at Bridge Camp you will be able to discuss trekking options with the local guides who will be assigned to the team. There are a choice of day treks along the river or over the hills behind Bridge Camp. 27-Jul-05 Wed Bridge Camp Acclim These day treks provide a perfect environment for you to assess your strengths and abilities as a team. 28-Jul-05 Thu Bridge Camp Acclim You may choose to do an overnight trek along the river, camping out on the sand banks, supported by boatmen and canoes. 29-Jul-05 Fri Bridge Camp Acclim Return to Bridge Camp on your final day, either by boat or canoe (NB: buoyancy aids will be provided and must be worn in the boats). 30-Jul-05 Sat Bridge Camp to Chipata Having completed your acclimatisation phase you will now be ready for the main challenging phase of your expedition. On your way to Mutinondo you will be able to stop off at Chipata en route to resuuply and if necessary do any laundry. It will also be important for you to call ahead to your trekking hosts and confirm arrival details and directions. 31-Jul-05 Sun Chipata to Mutinondo An early start to catch the first bus to Mpika. Mutinondo is situated just south of Mpika about 25km from the road. You will be able to either arrange a pick up with the owners, or source transport directly into the camp. On arrival at Mutinondo you will meet with Mike and Lari, the owners, and discuss plans for your acclimatisation phase. 01-Aug-05 Mon Mutinondo to Machinga Escarpment Trek It is recommended that you trek with a local guide who will be able to tell you about the flora and fauna in the area and give you an insight into the lifestyles of the local people. 02-Aug-05 Tue Machinga Escarpment Trek Mutinondo is set in a beautiful wilderness area. The owners have established a network of trails here which make an ideal setting for short day treks. There are waterfalls to trek to or small granite domes to climb and survey the surrounding scenery. 03-Aug-05 Wed Machinga Escarpment Trek After an initial couple of days of further acclimatisation the team may feel ready to set out on a 3 or 4 day trek across the Muchinga Escarpment. 04-Aug-05 Thu Machinga Escarpment Trek Climbing the escarpment you will come across some amazing views across the Luangwa valley. 05-Aug-05 Fri Machinga Escarpment Trek The trek will continue across the Mutinondo river and descend into the Luangwa Valley. The trek will be accompanied by Zambia Wildlife Authority Scouts for the last couple of days in the valley. 06-Aug-05 Sat Machinga Escarpment Trek Continue trekking. 07-Aug-05 Sun Machinga Escarpment Trek to S. Luangwa NP Final day of trekking. The team will be collected by vehicle and driven through South Luangwa National Park (one of the most famous wildlife areas in Southern Africa) to Tundwe camp, situated by the Luangwa River in a beautiful location on the edge of the park. 08-Aug-05 Mon S.Luangwa NP These couple of days will be made up of a combination of walking safaris and game drives under the guidance of a professional guide and Zambia Wildlife Authority Scout. You may also have an opportunity to visit the wildlife orphanage at Chipembele. Discuss all arrangements with Dave, the camp manager at Tundwe. 09-Aug-05 Tue S.Luangwa NP This is a unique opportunity to learn about the conservation issues affecting Zambia's wildlife and their nature habitat. You will have a chance to practice tracking animals, identifying spore and sampling some of the local fruits grown in the area. 10-Aug-05 Wed S.Luangwa NP to Lusaka Return to Lusaka and prepare for your final days of R&R and begin to wind down at the end of the expedition and plan your last few days in Zambia. These last couple of days are for R&R activities. Please note that all R&R activities must be in accordance with the WCE generic risk assessment. Remember, any optional R&R activities will be at your own expense. 11-Aug-05 Thu Lusaka There are many museums and parks to explore in, or near Lusaka. Alternatively you may wish to visit Lake Kariba or simply find a pleasant campsite to relax at. 12-Aug-05 Fri Lusaka Depart Final day and departure from Lusaka airport. Arrive at the airport in plenty of time for check in. The return flight will be with South African Airways departing at 17:00hrs on flight SA67 to Johannesburg arriving at 19:05hrs. You will then need to transfer onto flight SA234 departing at 20:05 for London Heathrow. A member of staff from World Challenge Expeditions will meet you at the airport to pick up team equipment. Onward transport from the airport is, however, your responsibility.
