The Sheik and Sabu

Sheik Araby March 1957
Sheik Araby (The Ring magazine/March 1957)

The Sheik was one of the most hated wrestlers in Japanese wrestling history. The Sheik & Abdullah the Butcher vs. Dory & Terry Funk was one of the biggest and bloodiest feuds, and they were the prime mover to letting me become captivated by pro wrestling in the 1970's. Sabu wanted to be a wrestler since he was three years old, when he watched his uncle, The Sheik, wrestle. He was instructed in the basics of mat wrestling and brawling by his uncle. He built a ring in his basement and created a lot of the aerial maneuvers by himself in the early 1980s. He graduated from high school and made his "unofficial" debut in 1984, in a wild brawl against The Sheik himself. His uncle gave him the name of "Sabu"; he liked it and built it by himself. He will work for Mrs. Baba's All Japan Pro Wrestling from May 26 to June 8, 2001.

Guerrero Family

Guerrero Family
(L-R) Mando, Chavito [Chavo Jr.], Hector, and Chavo Sr., Guerrero Family (circa 1979)

Chavo Guerrero Jr. (a.k.a. "Lieutenant Loco") had trained to be a wrestler since childhood and learned both Lucha Libre and American style wrestling from his father and three uncles, Mando, Hector, and Eddie Guerrero. Chavo Guerrero Sr. was one of the pioneers of the Japanese junior heavyweight scene as a rival of Tatsumi Fujinami, Atsushi Onita, and Masanobu Fuchi from 1978 to the early 1980s. Chavo Sr. is teaching history at a school in Texas now. Mando has been doing movie work for a long time in California. "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero has become two-time European Champion and Intercontinental Champion in the WWF. Eddie, as Black Tiger, was one of the best junior heavyweight wrestlers with Jushin "Thunder" Liger, Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit), and Dean Malenko in New Japan Pro Wrestling in the 1990's.

The Funks

The Funks
Dory Sr. (circa 1965) and Terry Funk (April 11,1999)

Dory Funk Sr., as a Marine, had stayed in Tokyo, Japan for six weeks immediately after World War II in 1945. Twenty-four years later, he, as a wrestler had his first Japan tour from November 26 to December 6, 1969. Terry Funk debuted as a wrestler on December 28, 1965 and had his first Japan tour from July 27 to August 5, 1970. "Texas Bronco," "Middle-Age Crazy" Terry has retired more than once before and there are bitter opinions against his age and his quick comebacks. But I love and respect his "destiny" as a wrestler rather than be disgusted.

Abdullah the Butcher (August 21,1970 and January 28,2001)

Abdullah the Butcher started his career as a wrestler as "Zelis Amara" and then took the name of "Abdullah the Butcher," billed as the "Mad Man from the Sudan," in 1958. He had his first Japan tour from August 21 to September 17, 1970. He had a lot of bloody feuds with Giant Baba, Jumbo Tsuruta, The Destroyer (Dick Beyer), Harley Race, Kintaro Ohki (Kim ILL), Dory & Terry Funk, Mil Mascaras, The Sheik, Antonio Inoki, and Stan Hansen in Japan. I was growing up, watching and attending his matches and he is still one of my most favorite wrestlers. He will work for Mrs. Baba's All Japan Pro Wrestling from May 26 to June 8, 2001.

She featured Kevin Von Erich, Don Muraco, Jimmy Snuka, and Rocky "Soul Man "Johnson, whom her daughter Ata married. Rocky and Ata Johnson are the parents of Rocky "The Rock" Maivia (Dwayne Johnson). After graduating as an All-American football star from the University of Miami, Rock followed his grandfather and father's dream.
