Please Come Back

Ramblin Rose

This is the title of a poem I wrote for the Sentinel.  I decided that I’d take some of them and make them into short stories.  So here is the first one.  Hope you enjoy.

Everyone in the bullpen made way for Jim Ellison.  He was in a mood these days.  No one knew where Blair was but he wasn’t there to buffer the moods and it was making them all insane.  Conner walked up to Jim and said, “Ellison, where's your partner.  I need to ask him where the hell his old partner is.”

“Very funny, Conner.  I almost forgot to laugh. Blair doesn’t have to be here all the time, you know?” Jim asked.

Conner looked at Jim oddly and realized that Jim was in pain and not something physical.  She’d have to find out what it was and try to help Sandy and Jim.  They were her mates after all.  Shit, I have to stop saying that, people think I’m talking about sexual mates.  Don’t american’s use this as a term for friends?

Rafe walked over to Conner and said, “So what’s up?  He’s not talking to any of us about Blair and I have a bad feeling about this.”

“Why? What have you heard?” Conner asked.

“Brown and I saw Blair yesterday and he turned in his badge and gun.” Rafe answered her.

“Oh no.  What the fuck's going on?  Sandy wouldn’t leave Jim for any reason.  What the hell did Ellison do to him?”

“Conner, we don’t know that he did anything.  Maybe Blair just couldn’t cut it as a cop.  Ya know?” Rafe said as he walked over towards Brown and told him what they were discussing.

Jim walked by and said, “If you’re all done discussing my fucking personal life, do you want to actually get some work done?”

They all just stood there with their mouths hanging open.  None of them knew exactly what to say.  Even Jim seemed surprised that this had come out of his mouth.

Simon stuck his head out of his office and said, “Ellison, could I see you for a minute?”

Jim walked to Simon’s office, went in and shut the door.  As he sat on the chair he asked, “What’s up, Captain?”

“Don’t give me that shit, Ellison.  You can say what you want out there to them but I want to know why my newest detective has left his job?”

“Simon, did anyone ever hear of personal things being personal?  I can’t believe how all of you climb on the Blair bandwagon and automatically think I did something.”

“Jim, that’s because you’re a jerk most of the time.” Simon said as he poured Jim a cup of coffee.  Handing it to Jim, Jim took it and said, “Thank you, I think.”

“Jim, you’re going to have to let someone in.  May as well be me.  Right?”

“Sir?  I don’t want to talk with anyone about this.”

“Why?  Why not, Jim?”

Jim stood up and said, “Because I cried all fucking night long, that’s why.  I hate being alone.  I know he’s not coming back and it’s my fault. I have no one, Simon. I’m alone as usual.”

As Jim began to pace the room, Simon said, “Well, why not try and make things work with the two of you?  What was the problem?”

“I couldn’t love him like he loved me and now I have to be alone forever.”

“No, you don’t.  You can fix it, Jim.  Just decide what you need to do and do it.” Simon said as he pushed Jim into the chair and said, “Now sit and relax a little bit.”

Jim put his face in his hands and said, “I wish he would have just killed me.  It would have been less painful.”

“Jim, you know he couldn’t have killed you. He’s your guide.”

“Simon, he hurt me.  I can’t stop crying.  I can’t control the fucking tears.  What kind of cop will I be if I break into tears every time I turn around?”

“A cop that made a mistake and perhaps wants to make things right?”

“Simon, I’m useless in this job.  I'd love to give up on both the job and my life.  I’m so fucking lonely, sir.”

“That can be remedied, Jim.  You know how to fix it.  So fix it.”

Simon could still see Jim’s shoulders moving with tears and didn’t make a move to stop him.  He just let him cry himself dry.  Once Jim started quieting down, Simon said, “So what are you planning to do, Jim?”

“You're all trying so hard to help me but don’t you see it’s not going to work?”

“I don’t see that, no.  I see a man in pain that needs his friends.” Simon said quietly.

“I fucking miss him so much I’m miserable.  My life has become unbearable.  Oh god, I need him to come back, Simon.  I need to show him how it could've been.”

“Well, I happen to have a number where he can be reached.  Would you like to call him?”

“Yeah, I would.  I need to tell him to come back.  I’ll promise to make everything right this time.”

“Here’s the number, Jim.  Call him and talk to him.  Just sit in here for a while.  I’ll sit at your desk.”

Thanks, Simon.” Jim said as he got up and made his way over to Simon’s desk and sat down.  As he dialed the number, Simon smiled and said, “Remember to tell him all the things you just told me.”

When Blair picked up the phone, he said, “Sandburg.”

“Blair?  Please come back.  I promise that things will be different.”

“Jim?”

“Of course it’s Jim.  Who else would be asking you to come back?”

“Jim, if this is your idea of sweet talk, you’re not doing a very good job.  You’re actually pissing me off big time.”

“Let me start again.  I miss you, Blair.  Please let me love you.  Let me show you how much you mean to me. I promise to do it right this time.  I swear.”

“You’re doing better this time.  What else?” Blair asked.

“Please let me just tell you in person exactly how I feel.  Please come back.  I can’t stand another day without you. The waiting's killing me.”

“Jim, it’s only been a day since I left.  Don’t you think you’re being overdramatic?”

Blair could hear Jim start to cry and his heart broke in two hearing his love suffer  but he also knew that Jim had to do this.  Once Jim found his voice again, he said, “I missed you so much.  I do desire the male body.  Not just any, but yours. I love you so much, Chief. Please come back.”

“All right, I’ll be there in about ten minutes.  Wait there for me okay? Don’t leave.  I don’t want us to miss this opportunity to talk about things.”

“Okay, I promise I’ll be here when you get here. Hurry, Blair.  I love you.”

Blair grabbed his jacket and his backpack and rushed out the door, heading to his car as fast as he could.  He was going back to his new lover.  Oh man, I love the sound of that. I can’t believe Jim said all of that to me.  He must be hurting a lot to break down at work like that. All right.

When Blair arrived everyone high fived him and he said to Simon, “Do you mind if I talk to him for a few minutes before we get back to work?”

“Sandburg, hurry it up.  I’d like my office back sometime today.” but as he said it, he shook Blair’s hand and shoved him in the direction of the office.  The blinds were pulled so he didn’t know what to expect.

As he went through the door, Jim grabbed him and pulled him into his arms.  Blair tried to shut the door, but Jim didn’t seem to care.  He just held on to Blair and Blair knew that he was going to lose it pretty soon, so with his leg, he slammed the door shut.

“Damn that Sandy.  We always miss the good stuff.” Conner huffed.

“Well, at least he’s back.  Jesus, I’ve never been so glad to see anyone in my life.” Brown said.

Rafe said, “I think Jim would be in total agreement on that one, H.”

After an hour the door opened and out walked the two detectives.  Both had red eyes but no one said a word.  Simon said gruffly, “It’s about time.  I was wondering if you were going to take the test for Captain and just take over my office.”

“Very funny, sir.” Jim said, smiling at his friend.

“Things all worked out, Sandburg?”  Simon asked.

“Yes, sir.  Everything's fine.  I’m back.  All he had to was ask me... and to say please.”

“Fine.  Do you want to come in and get your badge and gun?” Simon said walking into his office.

“Yes, sir.  I’m glad to be back.” Blair said, smiling as he followed Simon into the office.

Everyone walked up and said, “Wow, you talked him into coming back.  Way to go, Ellison.  How’d you do it?”

“I just said please.” Jim said, smiling and watched as his partner walked out of Simon’s office and sat at his desk.

They both started doing paperwork and everyone in the bullpen was happy once again.  Things were the way they were supposed to be.

End .
