Mine

It was a gorgeous Monday morning and Blair was in a fine mood. He
had passed all of his tests at the academy and now only needed to tell Jim
what his final scores were. He was bouncing all the way to the precinct.
As he walked into the bullpen, Henry called out, “Hey, Hairboy. How
come you aren’t in school?” Blair knew that he was teasing but they
kept telling him that he’d never get out of school. Sometimes, Blair
had felt as if this were true.
Laughing, he answered, “Hey, H. How’s it hanging? I’m officially
out of school now. So you can stop your complaining about me being
off.”
“How did you do, Sandburg?” Rafe asked hearing this last part of the conversation.
“Well, I don’t want to tell you guys before I tell Jim, you know what
I mean?”
“Tell us one thing. Did you do really well?” Brown asked smiling.
“Yeah, H, I did. I did.” Blair said again not being able to stop
smiling. “Speaking of my partner, where is he?”
“He had to go on a call with Conner,” Rafe said walking away. Looking
over his shoulder he called out, “And by the way, congratulations, Hairboy.”
“Thanks, Rafe,” Blair said walking towards Simon’s office. He could
hardly wait to tell Simon how well he’d done. Knocking on the door,
he heard Simon’s, “What?”
“Sir, I was wondering if I could talk to you for just a moment.”
“Sandburg, can the shit. Since when have you started calling me
sir?”
“Since I started getting a paycheck, sir,” Blair answered honestly.
“Is anything wrong, Sandburg?”
“No, I just wanted to give you my paperwork from the academy,” Blair said
as he beamed handing over the paperwork.
Simon looked at Blair and then the papers and said, “I’ll be damned.
Finished at the top of the class, did you? We all knew you could do
it, Sandburg. We’re really proud of you. Jim’s going to be one
happy camper. Speaking of camping... would you like four days off to celebrate?”
“That would be like so cool, sir. Thank you.”
“Sandburg, can it. Call me Simon. It almost sounds strange
hearing sir coming out of your mouth.”
“You got it, Simon. Now don’t tell Jim about this. I want
to surprise him, okay?”
“Get out of here. Jim will be back by lunch. Go relax over
at the diner. Catch up on some reading and I’ll send him to you at
lunch time.”
“Will do, Simon. Thanks,” Blair said as he left Simon’s office quickly
heading towards the elevators.
Everyone talked to him on the way downstairs. He was Ellison’s partner
and they all treated him as such. No one had treated him any different
than any other partner Jim would have. It might have something to
do with the fact that Jim would want to kill anyone that hurt Blair.
Jim had become overly possessive lately.
As Blair walked across the street to the diner, he saw it was really quiet
and just wanted to sit somewhere out of the way and read the new book that
he’d bought one day last week. This would be the first time he’d had
the time to read anything other than for his tests. Thank god they’re
over. God, I’m thrilled that I don’t have to do that anymore.
Walking into the diner, Blair saw Corinna, the waitress that was always
the nicest person in this place. She said, “Hey, Blair, how are you
doing?”
“I’m doing great, Corinna, thanks. And you?”
“Just fine, darlin'. Where would you like to sit?
As you see we’re pretty full and you might have to wait.”
They both laughed as she led him back to he and Jim’s normal spot, a booth
clear in the back. They liked it quiet and out of the way.
“Thanks, Corinna. I’ll take some nice black coffee right now.
In fact, I’m going to live it up and have some cream.”
“You passed the exams, didn’t you?” she asked smiling.
“Yup, sure did. Jim doesn’t know yet, so mum’s the word.” Blair
said sliding into the booth.
As she went to get his coffee, Blair had his back to the incoming customers,
so no one knew he was here. The only one he cared about was Jim and
he’d know where his lover was. He heard some cops from Vice and downstairs
come in and sit in the booth behind him. They were separated by a partition
that didn’t allow them to see Blair at all.
Sitting down, the two women said, “So is the bet on or not? You
guys are such chicken shits.”
“Yeah, the bet's on,” Ralph Johnson said. “First one to ask Jim Ellison
out and succeed's the winner.”
Blair sat there with his mouth hanging open. Corinna had walked
up to their booth and heard what they had just said and clearly didn’t know
what to do.
“You got a problem, lady?” Officer Sheldon said.
“No, I don’t have a problem. I just didn’t care for your tone or
subject matter,” Corinna said.
“Who gives a fuck what you care about?” Shelly said, laughing. Her
partner slapped her a high five and they both laughed.
Corinna glared at them all and said, “What do you want?”
“We’d like to see the manager,” they all said at the same time.
“I’m the manager,” She said, smiling evilly.
“Fine, we’ll have four cups of strong coffee and keep your opinions to
yourself,” Detective Ben Rogers said.
Corinna moved away from the table wondering what Blair Sandburg must be
thinking. And, for a moment, she smiled when she realized that man
was so smart he would think of something. No need to fear.
“Okay, so what’s the plan here, Shelly?” Denise asked.
“Well, you and I want to date Ellison. Sandburg's a fraud, an asshole
and doesn’t deserve that man,” Shelly ranted.
“Okay, why not tell us how you really feel?” Ben said laughing.
“Ben and I think that he’d be better off with one of us, so we’re going
to make a play for him. We’ll see who he goes for first,” Johnson said.
“Should we make bets on this now or later?” Shelly asked laughing her
evil laugh.
Corinna brought the coffee and set it down in front of each of them.
No one said thank you, go to hell or anything. God, Corinna hated
these people. As she walked by she saw Blair just smiling at her.
Again she was reminded of the smart, patient man sitting in that booth.
Oh Lord, she almost felt sorry for them all.
The four idiots continued talking and making plans until their coffee
break was over. Getting up, they left enough on the table for the
coffee alone. No tip. Corinna wasn’t at all surprised.
She walked up to Blair and said, “Are you all right?”
“Oh yeah! They don’t know who they’re dealing with.” Blair said
getting up and walking towards the door. Corinna looked down and saw
a twenty dollar bill and said, “Blair, you forgot a twenty on the table,
sweetie.”
“I didn’t forget. I figure you deserve it after dealing with those low-life’s.
Have a good one, Corinna. I’ll see you later.”
As he walked across the street, Corinna began to feel good about the day
again. She knew he’d take care of everything and no one would tear
apart that darling couple.
Blair got upstairs and almost ran into Jim. “Hey, Chief, what are
you doing here already?”
“Could I talk to you alone, Jim?” Blair asked nervously.
“Yeah. Come on, we’ll go back to interrogation room 3 and we’ll
be alone.”
“Okay. Thanks, man.”
Once the door was closed, Blair closed the blinds and then shut off the
intercom. Jim looked at him nervously and said, “Is something wrong,
Chief?”
“No, Jim. Nothing's wrong that can’t be fixed.”
“Shit, what did I do this time?” Jim asked, clearly upset already.
“Nothing yet, big man,” Blair said smiling.
“Sandburg, please tell me you didn’t bring me in here to jump my bones
at our workplace.”
“I have a little more class than that, Jim. Geeze.”
“So what’s wrong?”
“It’s about the academy,” Blair started to say but didn’t get a chance
to finish.
“Chief, I told you we’d do anything you wanted to do. If you don’t
like the academy then we’ll do whatever you want.”
Blair looked over at his lover, smiled and said, “I passed all of the
tests. I graduated at the head of the class. They’re not happy
about that one,” Blair said, beaming with pride.
Jim grabbed his love and hugged him hard, then pulled him even closer,
if that was possible, and kissed him long and intensely.
Finally pulling out of Jim’s embrace, Blair said, “Who was it that
just said he was hoping I wasn’t going to jump his bones at our workplace?”
Laughing, Jim said, “Sorry, Chief. I’m just so fucking proud of you.
You’re very hard to resist when you smile, especially that smile. He
said kissing his love again.
“Hey, tough guy, got any paperwork that needs to be done before we go
home?”
“Yeah, I could use some help. Thanks, Chief.”
“Hell, I better get used to it, eh?”
They both walked out to the bullpen and everyone waited for Jim to say
or do something. It wasn’t but ten minutes and Jim stood up and said,
“Could I please have your attention? I just wanted to let you know that Sandburg's
done with the academy and will be my partner soon.”
Everyone in the bullpen slapped Blair on the back and told him how happy
they were for him. After he talked to everyone he saw Kaye Sheldon
come into the bullpen and make her way to Jim. He blocked her way
and began to flirt with her. Jim watched this and was beyond pissed
off. He didn’t know what Sandburg was up to, but he was going to pay
for it tonight. Shelly didn’t know exactly what to do as Jim Ellison
headed over to her and shoved Blair out of the way and leaned into her and
said, “Stay away from him, you hear?”
“Yeah, I got it loud and clear,” she said leaving as quickly as she’d come
in.
“Chief, I don’t know what the fuck that was about but you’re going to explain
it to me later. Do you understand?”
“Yeah, Jim I understand and will be glad to,” Blair said, smiling at his
love.
Jim knew that he had missed something here. For some reason, Blair
seemed more than willing to talk about what was going on and he also couldn’t
smell anything coming off of his partner for anyone else.
They had no sooner gotten back to paperwork then in walked Ralph Johnson
big as day. Blair got up from his desk and walked over to him and started
flirting with him. Now Jim was more than pissed off. He walked
up to the hot shot Detective and shoved him back against the wall and calmly
said, “Do I need to tell you to keep your hands off someone else’s property?”
Johnson moved away from Jim and Blair as he headed for the elevator, he
didn’t even bother to answer. Jim almost smiled at the escape of this
one. All right, Ellison. What's the problem? What did
you miss? Blair's flirting with these people but doesn’t want them.
Why would he do that? Might he have overheard them say they wanted
me? Jim smiled to himself when he figured it out. Hopefully,
they wouldn’t have to worry about it any more.
When the elevator opened up, Denise Brent walked quickly over towards
Jim’s desk trying to get away from Sandburg, since she had been warned.
Blair jumped up and stopped her from getting too close to Jim and started
flirting with her. When he touched her hair, Jim knocked his hand
away from her and said, “Sit.” Blair sat. Turning to her, he said,
“Get the fuck away from what’s mine. Do you understand?”
“Yes,” she answered quietly, almost running for the elevator.
Jim stared at Blair and he smiled and said, “I’ll explain tonight.
Okay, tough guy?”
“You better believe it, Chief. You’re going to be explaining a great
deal.”
After about another half of an hour, the elevator dinged and out waltzed
Ben Rogers. Blair had run to the restroom so was unable to intercept this
one. He strode up to Jim’s desk and said in a husky quiet voice,
“Hey, Jim! Doing anything tonight?”
“Yeah, as a matter of fact, I’m going to be with my partner all night
long and he doesn’t share. I don’t share, either,” Jim said as quietly
as he could without drawing attention to them both.
Blair walked up at that moment and said, “Get the fuck away from what’s
mine.”
Rogers said, “Ellison, I can’t believe you let this little shit lead you
around by your balls.”
“You better believe I do. You have no idea what he does for me so
shut your big mouth and stay out of our business.”
As Rogers started to walk to the elevator he said, “Sandburg, he’ll get
tired of you soon enough and then he’ll want someone that can really make
him happy.”
“Well, thankfully, I do make him happy and you seem to have missed the
lesson I was trying to get across today. He’s mine. All mine
and no one else’s. So stay away from him and don’t come near him again.”
“You don’t scare me, you little prick,” Rogers said glaring.
“You could never call him a little prick. You might want to call
him a lot of things but you’ll never know because you’ll never be with him.
Now get the fuck away from what’s mine,” Jim said, glaring back.
“Jesus, you guys deserve each other. You’re both nuts.”
After he left, Jim said, “Okay, Chief, time to go home.”
“Okay, but one quick stop at the diner first. I promised to tell
Corinna something.”
“All right, but then we’re going home so you can explain what in the hell
I missed today.”
“Okay, hot shot. Let’s go.”
Jim told Simon they were leaving and both men walked across the street
to the diner and Corinna met them at the door and kissed Jim’s cheek.
“Hey, Jim, I’m so glad to see you.”
“This is all I can take. What’s going on and why are you kissing
me?”
“Because some assholes were in today and I was worried, but I shouldn’t
have been. Did Blair take care of them?”
“Yes, he sure did,” Jim said smiling over at his lover.
“Sit down, guys, I made your favorite meatloaf today. No arguing!
Sit in your booth,” Corinna said pushing them back to their booth.
They walked back smiling at each other and Jim said, “So they were going
to make a play for me or something?”
“Yeah! Jim, they had a fucking bet going. Corinna and I overheard
it and I told her not to worry; that I would take care of you.”
“And you did, Chief. You did. My hero. Thank you, Blair,”
Jim said leaning into him and kissing him gently.
He loved when Jim called him Blair. It went straight to his groin.
“Hey, Jim. Do you think we could get dinner to go? I really
need you to take care of a few things for me.”
“I’ll go and ask Corinna to wrap it to go,” Jim said smiling seeing the
hard on that Blair was sporting already. Hell, all I did was call
him Blair. I’m in for a good night tonight.
As they left the diner, Corinna smiled at the backs of the two men who
loved each other so much that it made her heart hurt sometimes. But
it also gave her hope that someday her knight would come walking through
the door of the diner. In fact, she wished this nice looking man could
be that knight. He went and sat down in a booth and she went to wait
on him. They talked a little while and she brought him her special.
He kept smiling at her and loved the extra attention she was giving him.
Finally getting up enough nerve, he asked her out. She said, “I’d
love to but I’ll call you at the precinct tomorrow and let you know for sure.
All right?”
“Sure,” he answered.
As he walked out the door, he said, “Night, Corinna.”
And she called out, “Night, Joel. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
Once he was out the door, she picked up the phone and called Simon Banks.
He was not only one of her best customers, but he was a close friend.
She could talk to him about everything. She needed to find out if he
knew Joel Taggert.
She smiled the whole time she was calling him because, somehow, she knew
that he was going to be her knight. It didn’t hurt being a hopeful
romantic all these years. And to think it all started with Jim and Blair
and the love she saw come from them.
Life was indeed sweet and it could only get sweeter.
