Bringing Down The Walls

Ramblin Rose

This is the 6th in a series of Sentinel poetry made into short stories.

Blair paced in the loft living room, trying to figure out what he would say to Jim.  Things were going to have to change for them both.  He was going to get Jim to open up to him if it killed him.

As he was thinking, watching the traffic out the window, he heard Jim’s key inside the lock.  Blair had thought he wanted to talk to Jim.  Now he was quite uncertain about what to say or do.  This was going to be harder than  he'd expected.

Jim walked in, saw the look on Blair’s face and knew something was wrong.  “Hey, Chief, what’s up?” Jim asked apprehensively.

“Jim, we have to talk.  It’s important.  Otherwise, I wouldn’t be pacing and having a nervous breakdown over it.” Blair said in one breath.

“Okay, Chief, I’m listening.  Tell me what’s wrong.  Are you mad at me?”

“No, Jim. I’m not mad at you.  I can’t stay mad at you for anything.  Even when I try... I can’t.”

“And this is a bad thing, Chief?” Jim asked smiling, trying to cover his uneasiness.

“Jim, I feel like I haven’t gained entrance to your heart.  The door's locked and bolted.”

“What the hell are you talking about, Blair?”

“You have to allow me in or you’re going to find out what it’s like to have your guide very angry.”

“I’m not getting this, Chief.  Please explain what you’re talking about.”

“You’ve got to let me in.  There's no place for your solitude.  I know that I’ll see some hatred and some fear.  That’s fine by me. Jim, I just want you to open up. Even negative is better than not letting me see you at all.”

“Chief, you know that I let you in all the time.  You know that I love you.”

“I know that you love me and with my love we’ll help lock away those nasty feelings you have.  Instead of keeping them bottled up ready to come out anytime.  We’ll take care of them so you understand them all.”

“Chief, you make it sound like I’m in some type of prison or something.”

“Jim, you are.  That’s exactly what you're in and it has very high walls.  If you’ll open up, I’ll show you the way out.  You’ll be free.”

“Jesus, Chief, I’ve been like this all my life.  I can’t change now.”

“Yes, you can, Jim.  I see the bars.  They are all confining.  We’re going to bend those bars together.”

“Blair, I need those walls up or I won’t have any control.”

“Walls might be surrounding you but inside the walls are crushing you.  You need to let them go.”

Jim looked over at his guide and saw the tears rolling down his face and asked, “Chief, why are you crying?”

“Because if you don’t let me in, we’ll both lose and that loss would be too much for me to bear.”

“I love you, baby.  Please don’t make me do this.”

“We’ll bring those walls down as if we are one.  You’ll have me along side you at all times, Jim.”

Blair walked up to Jim and touched his face. One hand on his face and the other touched Jim’s heart.  Kissing him letting him know his love was there for him to take.

Jim started shaking and trembling and then was held by Blair.  As Blair stroked Jim’s back, he smiled.  “Jim, those walls are falling now.  At this point we can both love fully and find love in everything we do.”

“I love you, Blair.  I love you so much.” Jim said trying to control his breathing.

“I know you do, Jim.  Things will get better every single day.  I promise you.”

The two men climbed the stairs to begin their new life as not only lovers, but also as being one spirit, one essence, and one heart.  Things would never be the same again and Blair was certainly happy about this turn of events.  Life was, indeed, excellent.
