  • dash of cinnamon (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Carmelize the sugar (this is somewhat dangerous and should be done by an adult): Heat sugar in a non-stick saucepan over medium heat, stirring until it turns golden brown and melts. CAREFULLY spoon into 6 custard cups (just enough to cover the bottom of each).

In a large bowl, mix together eggs, milk, and vanilla. Divide into 6 custard cups. If desired, sprinkle dash of cinnamon on top of each. Cover each with aluminum foil

Put filled and covered custard cups into a glass baking dish. Add enough water to reach about halfway up custard cups.

Bake for 1 hour at 350 degrees. Test with butter knife. If it comes out clean, they're done (it should be the consistency of baked pumpkin pie). Be very careful when taking dish out of oven.

Put dishes in refrigerator until cool. To serve, run butter knife around flan to loosen it enough tht you can turn it over onto a plate. Top with whipped cream if desired.

Jessica

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups ground almonds
  • 2 cups flour

Cream together butter and powdered sugar. Add ground almonds and mix well. Add vanilla; mix again. It's so appropriate to make Heirlooms the way Grandma probably did - by hand! And using your own power instead of a small appliance saves energy. Add flour. Mix until soft dough forms. Shape dough into 1 inch balls or crescents. Decorate top with cake decorations or colored sugar crystals. Bake at 325 degree for 15 to 18 minutes. Makes 3-4 dozen Heirlooms.
