Humberto Contreras was born August 21, 1983.  He skated for the first time when he was 9 years old at "Galerias Reforma," a small rink on the outskirts of Mexico City.
He enjoyed skating, but did not commit seriously to the sport until four years later, when a new ice rink was opened in Colonia San Jeronimo, closer to his home.  His first coach was Darin Carlton. Under Carlton's instruction, Contreras learned spins and jumps such as the single axel and double salchow.
In the summer of 1997, Contreras attended a summer camp in Cuernavaca arranged by his coach.  At the camp, he completed 45 days of intensive training.
By the end of the camp, Contreras was prepared for competition.
Contreras' first competition, 1997 Mexican Nationals, was held in Mexico City, where he placed 2nd at the intermediate level.
After a few coaching changes, Contreras transferred to Sportica Ice Rink in Mexico City, where he was coached by Elena Loboda.  Under her instruction, Contreras learned his first triple jumps.  He then worked under Alexei Mouratov at Sportica.  Under Mouratov's instruction, Contreras refined his jumping technique and overall skating skills.  After more than two years of training at Sportica, the rink was suddenly closed and later demolished to build a supermarket.
After the closing of Sportica, Contreras moved to Guadalajara to train for seven months with coach Alejandro Chavez.  During this time Contreras won the 2002 Mexican Nationals at the senior level.
After returning to Mexico City Contreras began instruction under Coach Wendy Boyle.  Under her instruction, Contreras won his second senior national title at the 2003 Mexican Nationals.
Following his victory at the 2003 Mexican Nationals, Contreras began training in the United States.  There, in Marlborough, MA, he was coached by Julie Graham and Rocio Salas.  Under their guidance, Contreras went to his first World Figure Skating Championships in 2005.  Graham and Salas also coached Contreras to his third senior national title at the 2006 Mexican Nationals.
Contreras is now living in Guadalajara, Jalisco and is looking forward to the 2009-2010 season.
