...formerly Martyr Man Land
Links:
Martyr Man (at least for now) lives in our archives only.  For those of you who don't know, that nickname evolved from Randy Wimm giving me a hard time about wanting to play a couple of divisions over my head (which these days could mean junior novice). After all the work done this year by people who truly sacrifice a lot of their personal life for the betterment of our beloved game and the passing of #00001, Steady Ed Headrick, I have set the martyr moniker aside for now. I still answer to it and I'm not about to rip the embroidered thread out of my golf bag, but I'm sure you get the idea. A lot  has gone on since my last update but one thing that never changes is that this is the best place on the net to see the faces of the folks we get to know on the PDGA Message Board and out on the course. I've changed ISP's and because the idiots at Momentum Online dumped my inbox 3 times, I lost a lot of the pics that you folks sent me. The main reason for the existence of this site is to see all your smiling faces and it doesn't work without your participation. So, please resend those photos and keep 'em coming.  If you would like to know when updates are made to the HCFDGW Disc Golf Rogues Gallery, sign in below. Peace&Plastic, Mark

THAT WAS THEN III...I think this was onstage with Wasteland in '95, but my memory's a bit foggy from that time period. (Click here, then on the song title for a listen. You'll need Real Player)

THIS IS NOW III...Since the Live Oak ZT10 saw the biggest gap between expectations and performance for me all year, this smile indicates the photo was taken before the first round.
Recommended Course of the Month: Moody's Disc Golf Country Club, Red Rock, TX: If you have not made the trip east of Austin to visit Pease Park's own Disc Golf Guru, Dave Moody, at his home in the pines near Bastrop, you are missing one of the most challenging and fun disc golf experiences in Texas. The 18-hole course At Moody's DGCC, designed by renowned course designer John Houck, will challenge all aspects of your game, as well as all skill levels. With Pro, Intermediate and Novice tees, you can play as brave as you feel. Although there aren't a lot of elevation changes inherent to this area geographically, there are some elevated basket placements that can make or break a round for even the most skilled golfers. Although most of the holes put a premium on shot making skills and placement, there a couple of beasts (#7 comes to mind, or is it #11, no wait, its #12) that will test your length as well. There are  6 holes where water can play a discouraging role, some of them obvious, others not as much so. The course is very well laid out and flows extremely well. One of the best things about Moody's is the tournament atmosphere during Dave's two annual B-tiers, the Red Rock Show and Oktoberfest. The food, fellowship and party are always top notch. Camping is allowed and there are many great spots to sleep under the loblolly pines. Greens fees are $5/day and if no ones there, please deposit your fiver in the lock box provided (which usually has scorecards in it for you). For camping fees and schedules visit the website linked above or go see Dave out at Pease Park on Lamar in Austin. Red Rock ROCKS!

Status of Burnet Course: 18-Hole Course is a part of the final phase of of a municipal recreation complex being funded by various sources, including Texas Parks and Wildlife. The course as planned (18 holes), was scored into the winning point total of the City of Burnet's last successful grant application to TDP&W. This means that it will get built...eventually. UPDATE: At the City of Burnet's invitation, Chris Himing and I walked the park recently, laying out several really cool holes. Four holes will have to wait on the upcoming acquisition of of some extra acreage adjacent to the property line, which the State has granted the city the money to purchase. This will never be a world-class, big tournament course lengthwise, but the amenities and the character of the layout mixed with the beauty of this piece of land will make this course a favorite of many players.

Status of HCFDGW Private Course: As many of you know by now, earlier this year I was involved in a deal to purchase a beautiful piece of land just 8 miles outside of Burnet, in the ambitious hopes of building Texas' premier private DG facility. Unfortunately (or perhaps for the best), that particular deal fell through due to a demanding and strange seller. The dream is not dead, however, and the longer I have to think about it, the more defined my plan has gotten and the stronger my resolve to get the project done has become. I have placed the funding in an interest bearing account and when the right deal comes along, it will happen. In the meantime, Hill Country Flyers has been sponsoring some of Texas' best events by putting on exciting Skins matches and is also involved in the best tour in disc golf, the Ziegenbock Texas 10 Charity Tour, by  sponsoring three Innova portable baskets to be given away at the final event to the tour champions of the women's divisions. Stay tuned...

Lago Vista Minis: Starting Sunday November 3, 10:00 monthly minis will start at the beautiful Lago Vista Resort disc golf course. I will be running the minis on the 1st Sunday of every month in cooperation with North Shore Disc Golf Club. A workday/random draw doubles mini is planned for Oct. 27. Please try to attend and pitch in as the only maintenance this course receives is from the NSDGC. Email me for more info.
