When I was 9 years old and in the 4th grade we moved to 55 High Street. It was a little brown house in the back yard of a bigger house. When we moved in the house had roaches. They did not live long with my mother. She cleaned the house and put a purple powder all around the walls and every place they could get in from. My biggest memory of this house was the strawberries that grew between the two houses. Of course, we were not allowed to touch them and only ate them when they were offered to us. The best thing about this move was getting reacquainted my 'old' friend from Abington Avenue School, Philomena. We were now both in Webster Street School. About this time I had my tonsils taken out. When I returned to school I would sit in class and feel sick because I could still smell the ether. Again we moved (for a short time) to Cutlet Street then to 112 High Street This house went around the corner, and downstairs was an A&P grocery store. During this time I would go to my aunt Josie's and clean her house. She paid me a dime for the movies and a penny for candy. I worked hard for those eleven cents. She took me one time to a field where they had airplane rides. I remember standing in line at a wood fence. The plane ride just before our turn crashed. To this day I will not get on an airplane. Aunt Josie also took Millie and me to one of those dances popular in those days where you danced till you dropped. Saw many couples just hanging on to each other. Being childless she more or less adopted my sister and me. Each year she gave us big Easter baskets. She died when I was 10 years old.
