ONE DAY I SAW
A BEUTIFUL BIRD
AND ALL MY FRIENDS WANT

Common name: Blue tailed emerald


Scientific name: Chlorostilbon mellisugus

 


Identification:

MALE: Mostly glittering green, forked tail steely blue black.

FEMALE: Shining green above by prom, white streak behind eye, under parts pale gray, sides slightly greenish; square or slightly forked tail steely blue black narrowly tipped grayish white.

Similar species:

Widespread and often confused.

MALE: Much like larger Steely-vented hummingbird but lacks latter's pinkish lower mandible, coppery rump, and steel blue upper and under tail coverts.

FEMALE: From other female Chlorostilbon by blue black tail; from latter by dark bill.

Voice:

Weak call a slightly metallic tsip, song a short chipping twitter.

Behavior:

Feeds singly at flowers (usually at low or mod), several gather at flowering trees, despite small size, flight is straight and darting

Habitat:

Fairly common to common in gardens, cultivated areas, and shrubby or semi open areas with trees; favors moist to mod, dry areas. Numerous near Cali, Colombia.


Range:

Mainly 1000-2200 in W. Andes, Cauca, and w slope of C Andes s through Nariño; locally to 600m in dry Pacific slope vals.

 

Why do you like that bird?

I like this bird becouse it look nice, that hummingbird was from manizales and was the best hummingbird in the book of Manizales Birds.
