Challenge Cup Preliminary Rounds
Heysham Atoms 1 Keighley Albion Cats 82

The Cats completed their round robin section of the Challenge Cup with this mauling of a seriously outclassed Heysham side. The Atoms are firmly rooted to the bottom of Division 2 and on this evidence it is not difficult to see why.

The Cats kicked off on a glue pot of a pitch and the first Heysham player to touch the ball fumbled it into the hands of Keira Burns. Keighley drove upfield and Burns herself completed the set of six by diving over near the posts. Skipper Laura Ackroyd adding the first of her 13 conversions. Heysham restarted and the next set of six ended with Sarah Cartwright diving over for the next score, Ackroyd again converting. Heysham kicked off again Ackroyd herself gathered and raced upfield to score a marvellous individual try. She must have still been catching her breath as she then missed her only kick of the afternoon.

The pattern continued for the remainder of the half with further tries coming from Jodee Loader, Louise Clark and another brace for Ackroyd. The only respite for Heysham came from a cheeky drop goal. The half ended with Keighley comfortably ahead at 40 points to 1.

Heysham began the second half in a more determined mood and enjoyed some good periods of possession. However even though Keighley began to treat the match as a training run out they still prevented Heysham from breaching their line. On the one occasion they threatened Ackroyd intercepted on her own line to race the length of the field to score a memorable try.

This seemed to take the last bit of fight out of Heysham and further tries followed from Shelly Whitwam, Leanne Ludlam, Tracy Lynch and Cartwright and Burns completing a brace each. The pick of these was Ludlam’s try as she shrugged off half the Atom’s defence in a storming run from halfway.

Ackroyd picked up the player of the match award, as much for her kicking as anything, with good support from Kirsty Horsfall. Next week the Cats return to league action with a trip to Birkenshaw.
