Women's Premier Division
Keighley Albion Cats 10 Wakefield 38

Though the Cats tried valiantly they went down to a better drilled Wakefield team.

The match started strongly with both defences dominating.  With Saima Hussain and Sarah Cartwright bottling up one wing and Jodie Billing sealing the middle the Cats looked impregnable.  However a few handling errors went the visitors way.  This pressure on the Keighley line told and Wakefield opened with a  converted try.

The Cats tried to hit back with lots of effort and but little direction.  Unsurprisingly this did not result in any score against the well-drilled Wakefield defence but the visitors broke out to go over after 25 minutes.

Albion looked like they could have bottled up the rest of the half but when Sarah Gatenby had the ball stolen shortly before half-time and Wakefield used this to snatch a converted try.  Half-time score 0-16.

Substitute Sharon Wilmot was introduced after the break and she soon showed that she meant business with her strong running and decisive tackling.  However this did not stop Albion being caught flat on their tryline and a converted try for Wakefield inevitably followed.  A few minutes later the visitors scored again.

Albion finally showed they could be contenders.  From the restart Laura Ackroyd’s kick found touch and a few play-the-balls later Keira Burns created a small gap that Ackroyd shot through to score under the posts.  Laura added the conversion.

Wakefield soon hit back with a converted try of their own.  However Gemma Liddon snaffled a loose ball near the Wakefield line.  This platform gave space for Tracy Lynch to float out a long pass to substitute wing Kirsty Horsfall.  The youngster then scored her first try for the Albion despite the attentions of a defender.  The visitors had the last word scoring a converted try at the end of the match.

Albion will have to look to their organisation and teamwork if they want to compete at the top of the Premier Division.  However in a game of good individual efforts both Saima Hussain and Jodie Billing were outstanding in defence and put a lot of honest effort into attack.  Coaches Andy MacDonald and Sarah Walsh were unimpressed.

The Cats’ next match is at league leaders Bradford on the 6th January.
