Recommended Christian Books
Let me put a disclaimer here that I attend
a church that is "essentially reformed with a strong charismatic element."
They are all great books that have first been recommended by my Pastoral Team
and my church's affiliation, Sovereign Grace Ministries, and then secondly by
me!
You can go here and find most
of these books listed on a page they let me make:
Amazon.com; Or here:
PDI Store.
Bible Doctrine - By Wayne A. Grudem
This book is the number one, absolute MUST HAVE
book on my list. If it wasn't for the chapter on regeneration in this
very book, I would never have understood my own salvation! This is a
condensed version of "Systematic Theology", which is used as a
text book in Seminaries. This book reads like a text book (but NOT to
bore you!) and because of it's simple format, it makes doctrine easy to
understand. It is very important that we understand doctrine as
Christians. If you would like to read a compelling argument on why,
please go
here.
Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life - By Donald S. Whitney
Also a must for every Christian. It explains why we do
what we do. It discusses such topics as Scripture reading, journaling, fasting
and serving.
I Kissed Dating Goodbye - By Joshua Harris
You may have heard of this one. It's been a best seller
for a while. I highly recommend it. If you haven't read it, or your sinful flesh
is trying to keep you away from it, please take my recommendation and READ IT!!!
Boy Meets Girl - by Joshua Harris
An equally wonderful book by Mr. Harris on the issue of
courtship.
Passion and Purity: Learning to Bring Your Love Life Under Christ's Control - By
Elisabeth Elliot
There is no book as good as this one, that I know of.
First of all, she writes short, easy to digest chapters. Second, she tells it
like it is. She calls a sin a sin and I like that in a person. Five stars!
When People are Big and God is Small: Overcoming Peer Pressure, Codependency and
the Fear of Man - By Ed Welsh
This book is wonderful, and I don't think there is anything like
it out there. I was a Psychology major in college, so a lot of my beliefs are
still influenced by psychological theories. This book helped to open my eyes to
see my sin not in terms of "lack of self-esteem", but as it truly is,
fear of man and a lack of fear of the Lord.
Women Helping Women - By Elyse Fitzpatrick and Carol Cornish
Another fabulous resource for understanding the sin, not
just psychological labels. This is a great book to help you become a Titus 2
woman. And speaking of Titus 2...
Becoming a Titus 2 Woman; A Bible Study with Martha Peace - By Martha Peace
There is no one that I have ever met that gives life to
you as straight as Martha Peace. She calls a sin a sin and makes no apologies
for it either.
The Excellent Wife - By Martha Peace
This book is wonderful, even if you arent
married. Its all about being a woman of God and having a Biblical
view of marriage. I can't tell you what an influence this book has
had on me. It's full of the Word of God and it will make you want
to pursue righteousness with your whole heart.
The True Woman - By Susan Hunt
I picked up this book at New Attitude 2001 and Im
currently reading it with "The Excellent Wife" as a Bible study on
being a godly woman.
The Enemy Within : Straight Talk About the Power and Defeat of Sin - By Kris
Lundgaard
This book is basically a "modern day" version of
classic doctrine so that we all can understand the nature of sin (I think it
borrows heavily from John Owen's work, but I'm not sure if it was Owen or
someone else). This book is very insightful as to our sinful nature. If you want
to understand yourself and why you do what you do not want to do, read this
book.
The Soul's Quest for God - By R. C. Sproul
There is a funny story about how I came across this book.
I found it in a used book store, and it grabbed my attention. I enjoy reading
Mr. Sproul's magazine, Tabletalk, so I purchased this book. I wanted to give it
to a friend who was a new Christian, so I read it first to see if there was
anything I could highlight for them to encourage them to read the book. As I
read this book, so many Scriptures came to my mind and I started to write them
all down in the margins. I found out just how full of truth this book is! It was
an amazing experience, so of course, I love this book!
Experiencing God's Forgiveness: The Journey from Guilt to Gladness - by John
Ensor
This is a very cross-centered book, which makes it very
uplifting. I highly recommend it!
Trusting God Even When Life Hurts - By Jerry Bridges
No one book has so influenced the way I view life. This
book is basically about how God is sovereign over everything, over nature, over
events and over mens hearts.
The Discipline of Grace: God's Role and Our Role in the Pursuit of Holiness - By
Jerry Bridges
This book will transform your thinking so that you can
understand justification, sanctification and how not to live by the "good
day/bad day" pattern of thinking.
Pilgrim's Progress - By John Bunyan
If you haven't read it, you should! It is a classic!
