The little fellow in the photo is my son, who was one year old at the
time. Wow, was it hard to get him still long enough to take the
picture! He is showing us a stick that he found.
The hat in the picture is the first bucket hat that I ever made! I used
Elsebeth Lavold's Cable Cotton-- it took almost exactly two balls, with
enough left over to add a chin strap. The yarn had a lovely feel, but
being 100% cotton yarn stretched out a bit. I think the pattern would do
very well in a yarn with more elasticity, or would be fantastic as a felted
hat. I blocked my hat by placing a wide can (about the same diameter as the
crown) inside a mixing bowl, positioning the hat with the crown resting on
the can and the brim on the edge of the bowl, spritzing well with a
teaspoon of corn starch mixed in a cup water, and letting it dry for a
couple of days.
Brim down.
Brim up.
All stretched out.

Unfortunately, the best Fran could do for a picture was a scan, so the picture on the far left has a shadow on it that makes it look like the hat has a crown. It doesn't, it is a beret!
