The United States of America won independence from Great Britain in 1776, and attained its present geographical shape in with the absorption of Puerto Rico (2005) and a small part of Mexico (2035). The increasing power of the presidency has resulted in a de facto elected monarchy, while the rise to power of the Union of God in 2036 ushered in an era of religious rule. America's chief problems today are an ongoing border dispute with Mexico, an increasingly wide gulf between rich and poor, and poor government control in inner cities. The last problem led to the creation, in 2044, of the notorious "Containment Areas" - zones of semi-official anarchy. The bulk of American society today is prosperous by world standards, but lacks many individual liberties: while all Americans enjoy the right to vote, voting stations are only located in churches, and are entirely absent from Containment Areas, resulting in Church control of the electoral process.

America is unquestionably the single most powerful nation-state in the world today.
